(47,366 posts)Leading cause of death is gun violence.

(205,927 posts)Disabled kids, most were four, Downs Syndrome, cerebral palsy, speech issues, one little girl who I spent a lot of time with was deaf. I loved those kids and I find I'm thinking of them all today.

(9,805 posts)She said we should collect the assault type weapons and send them to Ukraine.
As always, thanks for your posts.

(205,927 posts)They could use them - and any citizen in this country who buys an assault weapon obviously should not have one, we are not at war, except against this insane gun culture.
And thanks!

(6,207 posts)..... gated community homes, private security, and all the protections money and power can provide. Those kids will not be gunned down sitting next to kids who eat school breakfast and lunches, sitting in overcrowded classrooms with underpaid teachers and poorly paid aides.
If you are rich and powerful, you and your loved ones rarely, if ever, have to live in a dangerous environment.
And you like it that way and don't care about the lives of the kids you forced their moms to have because once born, they are no longer ANY CONCERN OF YOURS.

(6,207 posts).... in a public school shooting? Money and power buy security.
You are right; there are no totally safe places. But other areas are more at risk due to many factors. One is the availability of easy-to-access guns. Another is the changing national political environment.
My wife and I spent our work years working in public schools, Combined nearly 50 school years. We live in a region of the country where hunting is a way of life.
Through the late 1980 and 1990, kids in high school would drive their cars and trucks to school with rifles and shotguns in their vehicles so they could hunt after school. That changed with the Columbine shooting on April 20, 1999.
All guns on school property were prohibited from that point forward.
I hope your daughter is fine and won't suffer any long-term consequences for that horrible experience.

(47,366 posts)The wealthy and politically connected elite are always protected.
I am talking about most Americans, including the middle class.
My daughter is fine, but since I was on the phone with her the whole time she was frantically running to find safe shelter, it traumatized me. If I could have magically transported to her side, I would have taken a bullet in a heartbeat.
The police shot and killed the gunman. I kept looking at the pictures to make sure he was really dead.
Edit to add:
My father was career USAF, he flew combat in three wars. He did not risk his life over and over so that his grandchild could be shot and killed while walking to class. He would be totally disgusted with the American people for letting this happen. I am thankful he is not alive to witness the disgrace that is today's America.

(6,207 posts)To your final sentence: same with my dad who pass in 1999.
My dad and I both believe in our oath to "support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC."
Never had the opportunity to have that discussion with my grandfather.
It is the privileged elite who keep those same protections from the rest of us by refusing to pass gun regulations that protect us all.

(47,366 posts)Their quest is total permanent power and access to all US assets.
They don't care how many Americans they kill in the process.
One million covid deaths is fine with them. Gun violence is great for them.
They can fund raise on the deaths and get votes.
One of my grandfathers served in US Army, WWI in France. An uncle was in WWII, USN, ship was sunk and he was killed at Guadalcanal.
All of my grandparents were immigrants to the US to find safe harbor and build a better life for their children and grandchildren. Ironically all the countries they came from are now great places to live. And the US is not. In fact my daughter is thinking of migrating to Canada. So in three generations the dream of my grandparents is gone.

(6,207 posts)My grandfather was in France in WW I. My dad was in a jungle radio station on the Amazon River, intercepting German U-Boat communications. It was a top-secret program using radio directional radar to triangulate the locations of the U-boats in the South Atlantic when U-boats were hunting supply and troop ships supplying our troops in North Africachasing Rommel.
My dad came home with parasitic jungle diseases that he had to deal with for the rest of his life. He still worked full-time, and he and my mom raised six kids.
I enjoyed "talking" with you.

(47,366 posts)I am very interested in WWII. Your dad was doing a critical job. The German U-Boats were so superior, we were losing to them at one point. Yes the use of radar to track German subs was highly classified at the time.
My Dad was flying the Burma Hump in WWII. Then he was in Korea, but we never learned what he did there, classified. Then in Viet Nam flying missions to VN, Laos, North Viet Nam.
Same here, my father came home with life long issues related to being in war zones starting at age 18 until he retired from the AF.
Yes very nice talking with you as well!
