(17,864 posts)In the comments section, it brings up that it is good that the story isn't about Potter receiving his schadenfreude because the story is about Baily coming to realize his value to man.
Two points about It's a Wonderful Life -
1. You don't just get to put the money back. At some point the uncle is going to have to come clean and be pensioned off to his retirement. He is just too dangerous to continue as an employee of the S&L. The auditors don't know the situation, and, far from contributing to the stack, they are witnessing the coverup of a potential crime.
2. The thing that suspends belief most is Donna Reed as a mousy spinster librarian. No sane person would ever buy that.

(17,931 posts)That's wonderful. Got it. But just as important, Potter stole the money! And why didn't they get to the bottom of all that? Dad told me that wasn't important. $8 grand not important? Even in 1974, that was a chunk of change. Find the culprit and put them in jail for stealing. Dad said, what are you? The FBI? No, just a weird kid.

(5,444 posts)accidentally it's true. So is Potter obliged to give it back? By morality yes, but by law?

(17,931 posts)Potter is thus obliged to give it back. Otherwise, it's theft. If my wife accidentally puts her purse in the wrong shopping cart at a grocery store and doesn't realize what she's done, she hasn't given her purse to another shopper. They're obliged to return it or face a charge of theft.
