There may be standard psychological explanations, like a sensitive or fragile ego, but these may only scratch the surface of what's really going through his sick, sick mind. I suppose that he just doesn't want to be upstaged by anybody, and would rather take refuge in fantasy than deal with reality. That, and his not wanting anything to get in the way of the economy, the stock market and his own re-election - and his sociopathic inability to care about anyone or anything else. Ironically, if Trump had really taken this bull by the horns and followed the scientists, he could have brought this pandemic under control, and been in a much better position for re-election by now. He could have been a true hero. But maybe that in and of itself, is really taking refuge in fantasy rather than reality.
