(2,212 posts)This pisses me off, frankly. Ignorance breeds stupidity breeds yellowface and blackface. And you know what? The cure for this stupidity is, in one respect, pretty simple. Speaking from experience as a Caucasian, the moment you have close Asian friends, you see how outrageous (and idiotic) yellowface is. The moment you have close African American friends, you see how outrageous (and idiotic) blackface is. White-bread bubbles breed ignorance and stupidity. Mingle, people; for God's sake, mingle.

(2,212 posts)In the past, I've tallied up the number of Asian and African American friends I have out of curiousity. I seldom do that, but have a reason to do so just often enough so that I was fairly certain I travel in a cosmopolitan crowd. I wrote the comment above and then had a brief wave of panic come over me: "Wait! Who do I know who's Asian?" ~thinking... thinking... thinking~ Then: "OMG, Maria! Of course: she's originally from the Philippines! And then... ~thinking~ ... "And Nupur! She immigrated from India!" ~thinking.. thinking~ "And Sean! His entire family came over from Vietnam! And Katie, too! She came over as part of Operation Babylift!" Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Same thing with my black coworkers, friends, a brother-in-law, and my niece's steady, who's brilliant (we all hope they're getting hitched). The thing is: I know them; they're coworkers; they're neighbors; they're family and friends. They don't even register as Asian or African American to me unless I pause and really think about it. Which I suppose, on some level, is exactly how it should be.

(455 posts)GITS was my first anime. My kiddo mind was blown by the series and manga. Here is a main character who is not cis, who owns her sexuality, her power, her intelligence. She is defined by her actions, her capability, her strength and agency. For a young, gender non-conforming, closeted bi kid... Motoko Kusinagi was my hero.
To see her identity stripped away, diluted down, her VERY NAME taken from her.. wtf, Hollywood? Based on the previews I forced myself to watch on The MarySue, the "they stole your life!" plotline they are going for is ironic in the worst possible way.
I would have paid through the teeth to see this done well on the big screen. I'm not even gonna bother watching this sh*t torrented ~_~

(41,872 posts)Its amazing that most Japanese Drama is based off of Great Manga. Manga is read everywhere and by nearly everyone of every age. Read on buses, and in special Manga cafes. It also drives the Spirit of Movie and the Arts. Rurouni Kenshin and Full Metal Alchemist Ranks up there with some of my favorite Anime that I have collected. It also brought us great music from L'arc en ciel!

Another case (non-racial). I've often wondered why they casted Michelle Pfeiffer as a Russian woman (passable accent, horrible Russian) in "The Russia House," when there was an abundance of outstanding, English fluent, Russian actresses available.
Then there are allowable exceptions. Alan Arkin and Theo Bikel were outstanding Russians (excellent diction) in "The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming" (1966). I believe Bikel speaks Russian. Arkin apparently learned his lines phonetically. Amazing!

(41,872 posts)These days were all focused on Racism especially with a Trump Administration coming up, its always good to point it out now, and each time it happens and see if we can find some way to correct it without it being labeled as "Politically correct", mostly because the Right wingers will every time tell us how much they hate that. Well, whatever, people have a right to live their lives in peace without others causing problems for them simply for where they may have come from.
Some people look at Asians like as if we are all foreigners, but many of us have been here for several generations. My family spent 3 generations in Hawaii before my folks came to the mainland but yes they were originally from Miyazaki, Japan.

This is part of our shared history here in Seattle, the good and the bad and there has been both. Here is to the hope that we can recognize and acknowledge wrongs and work to be better together.
