The way he handled his son on the Andy Griffith Show was a primer on how to be a parent. Firm yet fair, admit when you are wrong, listen and most of all give lots of gentle advice and love. He will be missed.

at a time in America when fathers were expected to be the dispensers of discipline in a physical sense.

Many a kid grew up hating their fathers for not being like him.

His work will stand the test of time, and will always represent an American cultural ideal.

We truly lost a legend today - and a man who defied the current trend and showed that a devout southern Christian can be a passionate liberal.
