A Federal judge in the US has ruled Washington cannot indefinitely detain Americans suspected of having terrorist ties unless they have been found in connection with the September Eleventh attacks. It comes just six months after President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act, which would have allowed American citizens to be held without trial or charge. The judge initially ruled the act was unconstitutional last month, but the Obama administration asked her to reconsider the ruling. Attorney Carl Mayer says the act threatened Americans' basic freedoms.

(62,325 posts)anyone concerned about human rights in this country, least of all Democrats. It's a shame, because during the campaign he was eloquent on these issues, on Bush's abuses of the Constitution. That is what got my support, his apparently clear understanding of the Constitution which was a breath of fresh air after the soul destroying years of the Bush administration.
But this is a victory for the people, and it's sad that the president, who many of us expected to restore the rights taken away by the Bush gang, should be in this position today. He needs new advisers as quickly as he can find them.
The judge is right too, btw, the AUMF and all the other Bush policies pushed through after 9/11 were meant to deal only with people directly connected to 9/11.
