Some call it "intestinal fortitude"
I think he actually believed his own adage
"The only thing we have to fear is
. fear itself!"
I've been searching for him in another form ever since I first learned what this means.

We had to struggle with the old enemies of peacebusiness and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.
They had begun to consider the Government of the United States as a mere appendage to their own affairs. We know now that Government by organized money is just as dangerous as Government by organized mob.
Never before in all our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they stand today. They are unanimous in their hate for meand I welcome their hatred.

(41,131 posts)one of the greatest periods in our history along with Independence, the Civil War and Emancipation. I'm also here because FDR and his administration helped my grandparents survive the Depression, and my parents endure WWII and the Atomic Age. My mother spoke of FDR and loved working in NYC while Dad was in Germany, later telling us of the city, the Hudson river Valley & the Dutch Knickerbocker Tales. Before he departed for war she met Dad at the Roosevelt Hotel in Texas I think while he was training. They were so strong, healthy, unspoiled and good natured, The Greatest Generation for sure.
In 2004 I went to France and visited the Normandy Beaches in June, an experience I'll always remember. Our guide who was Dutch, mentioned that 'Roosevelt' means 'field of roses' in Dutch. Beautiful and it's always stuck with me! (esp. since I studied German & should have known that- ). I miss the parents, that strong era, the reforms of FDR and others, LBJ, JFK, and sense we are in a very precarious age of some kind of transition now...
