(29,846 posts)non-American nationals -- My Russian immigrant doctor, for instance. He's very
pro- US, but I remembered his being almost unbelieving at the fact
of veterans being allowed to be homeless.
Thanks from a grateful nation, indeed.

(2,479 posts)That anyone is homeless. We need to take on this problem of homelessness, and in the process, address the veterans as well.
I really don't buy into "veterans only" solutions. The "problem" needs solving, not just a portion of it. No American deserves to be homeless, whether they get conned into serving the "Power lords" of our country, or not.
whathehell
(29,846 posts)and I'm not just concerned with "veterans only", but I do think it ESPECIALLY hideous
that those who risked life and limb for their country, whether it was a 'con' or not, would
have to experience that.

"Hagen said guests were troubled Monday to learn of the homeless man's death and are waiting for authorities to release his name.
"They were very upset emotionally. They want to know if it's someone they personally know," she said.
It is important to remember that if it wasn't for the Milwaukee County Board, these people could easily end up in the morgue instead of a shelter.
During the 2015 county budget process, Boss Abele thought that because no one froze to death last year, the shelters didn't need as much money. He completely missed the fact that it was because of the shelters that there had been no deaths due to the cold:"

(56,582 posts)The biggest problem is getting homeless vets to trust that somebody coming to talk to them actually means well rather than harm. That says a lot, sadly.

(29,846 posts)I don't understand why they would be distrustful of someone, especially from
the American Legion, trying to help them get a home.
Can you explain?...I'd appreciate it, as I'm really interested as this disgraceful situation has bothered me for a long time. Thanks.

(2,168 posts)That's the real problem, I believe. It makes people distrustful and reclusive, and fearful of normal social relations. As the video said, once you get past the PTSD, the vets have a lot of discipline and other great qualities that are valuable to employers.
Also, I was watching another video on this site last night in which Cenk Uygur of TYT broke down the massive military budget. It turns out that only 1% of it was spent on veterans' services. Just think what we could do if we raised that figure by just one percentage point to double it! We oughta be able to do that as a nation.
