(25,245 posts)so the Dems win back the House and increase their hold in the Senate. It was so cool to see the pics of the lines of people waiting to sign-up for ACA yesterday. It's also cool to see that ACA is gaining popularity amongst the American People.
Hopefully the American People have awaken to the sinister tactics of the Repubs and will make them pay for all the damage they have done to our economy; their attempts to suppress the vote and the lack of any cooperation with the President.
It's pissing me off to listen to the cable news shows today. Even given the turnout/surge and that it looks like enrollment will hit or surpass 7 million - they are looking for ways to discredit this accomplishment and sway opinion negatively.

(31,233 posts)desperately, to hold our majority in the Senate. I don't think we'll take back the House until after the next census.

(27,797 posts)How do you know?
Why WON'T we "Take Back the House"??
Why CAN'T we "Take back the House"
All we need is for Democrats, moderate and progressive Independents, and others to turn out in great numbers this November and vote Democratic
Tarheel_Dem
(31,233 posts)certainly not going to do it in a midterm. It's math. The districts won't be redrawn until around 2020. That's going to be our best chance at taking the House again, but we can hold onto the Senate if Democrats do what you laid out.

(27,797 posts)If the Democratic Party leaders stopped bickering about Obamacare and focused on the following, Democrats could retake the US House of representatives:
1) Registering 5 to 10 million new voters
2) Making sure that there is a Young Democrat's club on EVERY college campus
3) Work with progressive groups like the Occupy movement (Occupy the Vote), Move On.org,
Veterans For Peace, Common Dreams, Project Vote, America Votes,(with 20 million members)
Rock The Vote, League of Young Voters, New Voters Project, the Voter Participation Center,
the League of Women Voters (LWV), Common Cause, and other progressive groups with the
goal being TO DEFEAT THE REPUBLICANS this November
4). There must be an effort to get moderate & progressive millionaires & billionaires to help
in countering the negative ads the GOP will run in every state...George Soros & one or two
others is not enough...Wealthy Democrats, moderate & progressive Independents, and
others MUST be willing to dig into their deep pockets to fund Democratic Congressional and
Senatorial campaigns.
5) Democrats like Bill Clinton, Howard Dean, and others, plus Independents like Bernie Sanders
could help with "Get Out The Vote" campaigns, and work with others to make sure that
moderate and progressive Democrats and Independents do NOT stay home on Nov. 4, 2014.
The Republicans CAN be defeated this November.
The Democrats CAN retake the US House of Representatives this November
The Democrats CAN get to 60 votes in the Senate this November
But none of this will happen unless what I listed above takes place.
Also, President Obama must be very careful about what he says and what he does between now and November.

He can't on the one hand say things such as his "biggest worry is a nuclear blast on the city
of New York," while on the other hand, cutting in half of the amount of money New York City will get next year from DHS for nuclear detection

For the Democrats to pick up enough seats to retake control of the US House of Representatives, President Obama needs to learn from Jimmy Carter, he needs to CALL on Jimmy Carter for advice now and then, something he has not done so far.
In an interview with NBC's Andrea Mitchell on Meet The Press last week, Carter said that "President Obama was the only President who has not asked him for any advice."

(27,797 posts)!) He could ask President Carter about dealing with the Russians, since Carter had to deal with the Russians back when Russia was the Soviet Union
2) He could ask President Carter about alternative energy, which Carter was an early proponent of, (not just by words, but also by deeds)
(Why hasn't President Obama installed solar panels on the White House like Carter did?)
3) He could ask President Carter about dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian issue, since President Carter was the only U.S. President to ever negotiate a peace treaty between Arabs & Israelis.
4) He could ask President Carter about ANYTHING he wants to; but, instead, he has chosen to not ask Carter ANYTHING AT ALL.
Does he dislike Carter?.
Does he think Carter has no knowledge of anything useful?
Isn't it customary for Presidents to occasionally ask former Presidents for advice?
Has he ever asked Bill Clinton for advice?
Your question indicates that perhaps you, yourself, don't think too highly of President Carter,
or am I wrong?

(55,008 posts)my financial situation is so freaking complicated and we are probably borderline eligible for the state version of medicaid. I had planned to get the taxes done first so I would have some clear numbers but said the heck with it and took a slightly optimistic guess on income for the year, qualified for nice "tax credit" and got the app done last night. Will be insured (other than a few emergency qualifications for state care that lasted for short periods) for the first time in over 25 years starting May 1. Kind of a shock to the system, I gotta tell you.
And it looks like I got the oldest son's application started just in time too. My one little piddly complaint - the website shut down at midnight. DC time. Some of us western procrastinators were planning on a couple more hours of "last minute"

(25,183 posts)First, of the seven million, how many aren't paying a thing because they qualfied for Medicaid? Even I'll admit, it's not hard to get someone to apply and accept something that is 100% free. Of course, the argument then becomes, "Now the people who have either free Medicaid or massive subsidies are incentivized to stay poor."
There's also other hurdles for the ACA, we have no idea exactly how many true Obamacare subscribers are going to continue to be able to pay the premiums and stay in the plan, and we have no idea what doctors and hospitals are going to say when newly-insured patients don't pony up their shares of deductibles and co-pays.
This thing still has a rough road ahead of it.

(18,219 posts)but I have to wonder why that many people waited so long. Is it possible that they did not have opportunities to have help at a venue like this until now? Or are there that many procrastinators?

(56,828 posts)to show that Obamacare was way under expectations at 6.0 million?
The graphic was a bar chart where 6 million was about 1/4th the height of the "goal" of 7 million.
