(10,893 posts)I always thought that they became the party of the rich once Reagan set foot in the Oval Office. I'm surprised to hear that even Eisenhower wasn't really down with working class folks too much.

(118,778 posts)I knew it was a time of great poverty, boom and bust. Didn't know the GOP was running the show practically the entire time.

(111,339 posts)However, selling out completely to the plutocrats is what destroyed the Federalist Party. Rank and file people realized they were being cheated six ways from Sunday and abandoned the party, leading to its collapse.
Reagan is really the one who put the plutocrats into the driver's seat while he brought in the religious crazies in order to gain numbers to get into office. The Reagan coalition is breaking down as the religious nuts realize they've been used by the plutocracy. Either they'll take over in 2016 or they'll be gone.
They're not going to sit down, shut up and do as they're told the way they did in 2012.

(390 posts)FOREVER! There were little periods of hope during the progressive era, but, even doing the time leading up to the Civil War, the GOP was about business and the wealthy. The reason why they didn't like slavery, was because the business leaders in the North, detested the fact, that they had to actually pay Irish immigrants. While the Southerns relied on enslaved labor.
