Profits ahead of people

Gil Smart/Smart Remarks:

It's the reason many on the left side of our political and economic debate call jobs that pay little, and offer few to no benefits, "Wal-Mart jobs." The company currently sits atop the Fortune 500 list; sales rose last year by 5.9 percent, to $443.9 billion. Profits were just under $17 billion.

And the family of founder Sam Walton is the richest in the United States, and one of the richest families in the world.

Now, you might say: So what? They built that fortune and are entitled to amass as much money as they like! Sure. But I point all this out because in her column last week, Chavez wrote this: "If the bill were to become law and Wal-Mart was foolish enough to go forward with its plans to open six D.C. stores, the company would have to raise its prices."

No. No it wouldn't.

Certainly, profits at those stores would be less than what the company wants. But is it so inconceivable that the richest family in America might accept a little less, so that employees could have a little more?

In our current environment, it is inconceivable. And this is the biggest reason our country remains in an economic hole that we won't be climbing out of anytime soon.

I don't believe it! Someone's besmirching the good Wal-Mart name!
