The case of Clarence Thomas's motor home gets curiouser and curiouser
By Ruth Marcus
Is Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas a tax cheat? His lawyer insists not. The available evidence suggests this is a fair question.
The loan was never forgiven, attorney Elliot Berke said in a statement about a $267,000 loan from Thomass friend Anthony Welters that enabled the justice and his wife to buy a luxury motor home. Any suggestion to the contrary is false. The Thomases made all payments to Mr. Welters on a regular basis until the terms of the agreement were satisfied in full.
This is hard to square with the information laid out in a Senate Finance Committee report on the transaction and difficult to credit in the absence of supporting information beyond Berkes conclusory assertion.
Thomas with his multiple failures to disclose his wifes employment, his receipt of free private plane travel and tuition payments made on behalf of his grandnephew has forfeited the benefit of the doubt. If Thomas, as Berke asserts, indeed satisfied in full the terms of his loan agreement, then lets see the agreement. Lets see the canceled checks.

(37,124 posts)Just ask Amy. Sophomore debate mr Berke. If you assert, you must prove. I know, incredibly difficult for a conservative to understand must prove.
And as an aside, slappy Thomas was one of five Catholics to overturn Roe V Wade in a 5-4 decision. Leonard Leo, Billionaire Catholic was very interested in the case.

(681 posts)he had to convince the voters that he would not be an instrument of the pope. I'm fairly sure he wasn't. I don't believe that it is coincidence that five Catholics justices overturned Roe. Not that I'm casting shade on the pope. The ruling wasn't at his behest.

(37,124 posts)Hes not too happy with his conservative Cardinals and their world view. I do not look forward to his passing. The next Popes selection will be akin to republicans trying to find the key to the liquor cabinet.
I am a recovering Catholic. 40 years was enough. I left a long time ago.

(13,631 posts)possible reason to be shy about producing the receipts if it's on the level. We know he has the motor home. He either bought it from someone, or it was a gift/forgiven loan.
I had some forgiven debt years ago and had no possible way to hide it. I got I think it was a 10-99 form. I had to pay taxes on it.

(6,127 posts)No damned integrity or conscience. What happened to this person to be able to slither his way into a trusted institution only to poison it? Such a mindful indifference to any consequences of his "alleged" illegal activities. Sociopath? Is everyone in the GQP just a heartless sociopath? Greed. They are purely power hungry and greedy, with zero empathy. The classic mark of sociopaths.
