The bigot who called me a 'diversity hire' has found a new hero: Ron DeSantis
Isadora Rangel
I had been a columnist at a paper in Central Florida for a few months when I got a two-page email from a reader angry at a column I wrote about race.
There were comments written that I cannot reprint, but one stood out. The reader, a man, accused my former employer of hiring me to fill some imaginary diversity quota. I was a young woman who had just been hired for a leadership job once occupied by a veteran male journalist. Im an immigrant from Brazil who, despite being in this country for almost 17 years, still speaks with an accent. In Miami, thats every other person, but in Brevard County its still unusual. God knows what the reader wouldve said if I were a person of color on top of being a foreign woman.
That was almost six years ago. Few people knew who then-U.S. Rep. Ron DeSantis was or what the acronym DEI diversity, equity and inclusion meant.
Today, DeSantis has found the power of turning those three letters into a boogeyman. He has made eliminating DEI initiatives in public universities and colleges his mission in 2023. Closing a diversity office is among the marching orders at New College, the liberal arts school in Sarasota thats just gone through a hostile takeover by DeSantis appointees.

(17,046 posts)what damage this idiot is doing to your state - before it is too late.
And, yeah, both 'Global Warming' AND Ron DeSatin are an imminent danger to Florida.

They happen to be married (to each other) lesbians so that alone may have played a future reason to get the hell.out(!), but they've put up with their last hurricane 🌀👎 first!
So they're looking at 4 other States. They'll keep us apprised. And a few people other friends & acquaintences elsewhere have tossed their suggestions as well.

(3,765 posts)Is when the core of what DeSantis represents, hits them in their pocketbook. Because apparently it does not have any impact on their moral sense of responsibility and concerns.
Maybe, Disney will wake up when people (outside of Florida) decide to make a statement - and companies like Disney decide to move to another state, a state that will eventually not float away with the next big hurricane.
My thoughts.

(37,926 posts)CRT, DEI!. I found another three letter crisis today in the Topeka Paper. ESG. ENVIRONMENTAL, SOCIAL AND GOVERNANCE, as they relate to investments in the retirement funds for state employees. Guess which political party is opposed? And why are they opposed? Because ESG investments may undercut the oil and natural gas industries.
As KS state rep Rui Xu (D) responded I see this as the latest manufactured 3 letter crisis that social conservatives have concocted to fight their culture war.
Greedy haters stay busy, busy, busy.
