What is the moral response when bad things happen to bad people?
Weve got it under control, he said. Probably be gone with the warm weather, he said. One day like a miracle, he said. Now, like 7.3 million Americans, 208,000 of whom have died, he has the disease.
Seldom in human history has any man been so deservedly hoisted by his own petard. Seldom has justice seemed more poetic. And seldom, it must be said, has a plot development been less surprising. I mean, who didnt see this coming?

(585 posts)From Wikipedia:
"Hoist with his own petard" is a phrase from a speech in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet that has become proverbial. The phrase's meaning is literally that a bomb-maker is blown up ("hoist" off the ground) by his own bomb (a "petard" is a small explosive device), and indicates an ironic reversal, or poetic justice.
The phrase occurs in a central speech in the play in which Hamlet has discovered a plot on his life by Claudius and resolves to respond to it by letting the plotter be "Hoist with his own petard".

(46,042 posts)I'm not going to wish death on anyone, but I'll be glad for his absence, and ultimately, I have no power to determine what happens.
In this case, the earth germs are defeating the monsters, as in The War of the Worlds. This virus is very likely saving us from the threat of an autocratic take-over of our government. I thank it for that, whether Trump recovers or not.
Plus, maybe now, the MAGATs and the maskholes will finally take this virus seriously and wear their damned fucking masks. That could save tens of thousands of lives.
I still have no power to determine what happens, but Trump's illness or death is a boon to humanity, and i'm glad for it.

I can't figure out why anyone so intelligent would believe what he believes.

(35,300 posts)I'm always of two minds on the issue.
The first is that you have your ideals and then when your actions/attitudes clash, well, "the flesh is weak." Hard to uphold ideals 100% of the time--and, if they're lofty enough, 50% of the time might be unreasonable.
The second is that your actions and attitudes point to your underlying ideals and values, whatever lipstick you place on the porcine critter that is your collection of ideals and values.
The latter serves as a wake up call that your practical values aren't what you think they should be. The danger is slacking and finding some sort of moral self-righteousness in one's personal nihilism--"yeah, I'm a pig-f--ker when it comes to my values--screw everybody, I'm god and they can like my a-s--but hey, I self-identify as a pig-f--ker and dare anybody to sit in judgment of me until they have my set of lived experiences and the intersectional quality of the oppressions that I, as a bestialist, have suffered in a cis patriarchal hegemonic fascistic societas."
