Drew Cox, 6, Raises $10,000 At Lemonade Stand For Sick Dad
When Randy Cox, a father of three from Gladewater, Texas was diagnosed with Seminoma cancer three months ago, his 6-year-old son, Drew, knew he had to help in any way he could. "He is so important to me, we love to play with each other," the boy told KLTV.
And help he did. On Saturday, Drew opened his lemonade stand for business on Walnut street. The boy charged 25 cents a cup. By the end of the day, the family counted out his earnings -- a staggering $10,000 for his dad's medical bills.
"It's the best place in town to get lemonade," one patron told KLTV. Indeed, cars were lined up down the block to visit.
Drew wasn't surprised by the incredible turnout. "I was thinking that everybody would come," he said. The Cox family expressed their endless gratitude to all that donated on KLTV.

On one hand, how can one not be moved by the efforts of a six year old to raise money to help his father? How can one not be moved by the townspeople who supported this fine young man's efforts?
On the other hand, how is it that we Americans live in the only industrialized, first world, Western nation that doesn't have a state-sponsored health plan that would pay these expenses?

People wouldn't have to hold raffles or bake sales or benefit concerts in order for their family members or friends to have an operation or buy medicine.
I'm glad so many people helped this boy and his dad. But it shouldn't have been necessary in the first place.

This guy is going to have to mortgage his house (if he hasn't already), sell the cats, and pile up immense debt in order to be treated. And what's the rationale, that life is worth any sacrifice?
Only in America do you have to lose your life to save it.
