"Whiffyleaks": Julian Assange told to take shower

Whiffyleaks: Julian Assange told to take shower

Julian Assange’s poor hygiene has played a role in the latest agitations by Ecuador to extricate him from his five-year standoff in its embassy, a well-placed source has told The Times.

Staff at the embassy in Knightsbridge have made several complaints about the Wikileaks founder’s lack of cleanliness since he holed up in a back room there in 2012, the source said yesterday.

The claim came after it emerged this week that Mr Assange, 46, had been granted Ecuadorean citizenship but that an application by the country’s government to assign him diplomatic status was turned down by Britain. “It seems he doesn’t wash properly,” the source, who has visited Mr Assange at the embassy, said.

He added that the issue was a likely incentive in recent moves to bring an end to the legal and diplomatic row that Mr Assange created after failing in an attempt to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning on allegations of rape and sexual assault.

Those charges have now been dropped in Sweden after prosecutors questioned him at the embassy, but he still faces arrest for skipping court bail and could be jailed for between two and ten weeks should he leave.

Mr Assange believes that the US authorities have prepared a sealed indictment and intend to extradite him for sedition and espionage after Wikileaks published hundreds of thousands of military and other classified documents damaging to Washington.

The small embassy is in a flat that occupies half the ground floor of the red-brick mansion block near Harrods. Mr Assange’s complaints about noise from a loading bay led to the ladies’ lavatory being converted into a bedroom set back from the alley where lorries arrive in the mornings, meaning that staff have been sharing the single remaining bathroom with him.

According to one friend and former colleague, this may cause a problem. Jérémie Zimmermann wrote in 2012 that “unless the people around him force him into the shower, he might not change his clothes for days”.

Daniel Domscheit-Berg, once Mr Assange’s closest acolyte, said: “Julian ate everything with his hands and he always wiped his fingers on his pants. I have never seen pants as greasy as his in my whole life.”

A US official said yesterday that arresting Mr Assange remained a priority for the American authorities. The US would not confirm whether it would request extradition if he were arrested in Britain.
Diplomatic immunity was denied & Mr Assange was granted Ecuadorean Citizenship.

If he should be arrested before leaving for Ecuador, & brought to the US, I believe Trump would pardon him immediately.
