NYT editorial: Yet Another Curb on Abortion

Republicans on Capitol Hill chose an odd way to mark International Womens Day on Thursday. The Judiciary Committee in the Republican-controlled House held a hearing to promote a mean-spirited and constitutionally suspect bill called the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act.
It is both an attack on womens rights and on the basic principles of federalism.
Thirty-two states have laws requiring teenagers to consult their parents or get their permission before obtaining an abortion, or else seek a judges permission. The bill would expand the reach of those restrictions by imposing a mandatory parental notification requirement and 24-hour waiting period on women under 18 who travel outside their home state to get the procedure.
Anyone who helps the minor in the absence of judicial authorization without first informing her parent or legal guardian and that includes grandparents, older siblings and clergy would be subject to criminal and civil penalties that include up to a year in prison and a $100,000 fine.

(14,337 posts)will EVER take their Minor Child across state lines to have an abortion. If you have given birth, you must be ANTI-CHOICE. Force your 12 year old daughter to have a rapist baby. Yep, ALL mothers and fathers want that.

(36,392 posts)The headline should read, Yet Another Curb On Women's Privacy With Their Physicians. This stupid right-wing initiative will not "Curb Abortions", but it certainly does curb the confidentiality of patient/doctor consults. What a sad shadow of its former Paper Of Record status the Times has become.

(46,094 posts)You're under 18. You have sex. You're female and are pregnant.
You can't get an abortion without parental notification. You're not going to either of your parents with this news. You can't travel to another state because barring no new Underground Railroad and back-alley abortion office, nobody will help you.
You run away and have the baby. And it isn't easy to care for a baby when you can't get a job for more than minimum wage. You're falling behind.
Child Protection/Welfare picks you up on their radar and take away your baby. By this time, you love your baby. But you're now deemed an unfit mother. Your baby is given to strangers, foster parents who fall in love with your baby and want to adopt it. You go to trial. You try to prove you found stable housing, a decent job, but you fail. Your parental rights are terminated and your child gone forever.
You've just been enlisted as a government breeder.
