Chelsea Clinton panned for doing some good in new TV job
Theres a bigger story here than nepotism, though, and its a story that Chelsea Clinton brought to light: the success of a bootstrapped program helping disadvantaged kids in Pine Bluff, Ark. Clintons piece on TOPPS Inc. her first on television may not have been the most polished broadcast work, but its having an impact for Annette Dove, who invested her life savings to mentor, feed and tutor low-income kids.
The response has been phenomenal, for someone like Annette whos been on a wing and a prayer for the last nine years, said Amy Reinhold, a volunteer helping answer the phone Tuesday. The phones literally started ringing before the first segment was over in the first time zone, and they have not stopped.
Reinhold said more than 1,500 donations had come in through the organizations online donation button on its Web site. Whats more, people from poor neighborhoods around the nation are calling to get Doves advice on starting similar programs.
That was the greatest hope by Chelsea and Annette, that this could be duplicated in neighborhoods all over the country, Reinhold said.
At a time when child poverty rates are on the rise, a solution such as Doves deserves far more attention than whether Chelsea Clinton is on TV because of her family connections.

she seemed sort of nervous, but I was glad to see her on there

(4,192 posts)She may have got her foot in the door by name, but from here on out, it's all up to her as a person. Frankly, I hope she does very, very well. We need someone with a heart and soul in the media. So does the media.

(4,192 posts)But if she actually succeeds and does good work, I hope you can find it in yourself to be glad for her - and us. We could really use someone who actually cares about people, rather than just business, reporting to us these days. And by the pick of her initial story, sounds like she actually wants some good to come of it.

(8,244 posts)awkward kid. I think she's great though. It was a very moving story that she told there. She highlighted a very good program there in Arkansas. I think she is going to do well. She clearly has a good head on her shoulders and for some reason I don't resent at all that she got the job just because her parents are who they are.
Normally nepotism is bad. But in this case I think it's not a problem.
