Ambush planned for years, state police say
Source: Scranton Times-Tribune
Police suspect Eric Matthew Frein planned for years an ambush of law enforcement.
A computer the suspected cop killer had access to had information on how to avoid police manhunts, Lt. Col. George Bivens.
Lt. Col. Bivens reiterated the search are is massive and landscape rugged, making the manhunt difficult. They still believe he is in the wood along the border of Pike and Monroe counties.
More than 100 law enforcement officials dressed for war left the abandoned Buck Hill Inn this morning.

(111,254 posts)Frein seems to be trying to lead as many cops as possible into an ambush by laying a trail of evidence and combining that with civilian sightings.
This is not going to end well.

(2,068 posts)The SP have at their disposal numerous high tech capabilities including helicopters equipped with heat signature cameras as well as night vision goggles and tracking blood hounds. To say they've seen Frein but couldn't then get to him due to distance just seems asinine to me. I mean for cripes sake, they mean to tell me the guy can't be tracked with bloodhounds even after he was seen? WTF? The dude has got to be leaving his scent trail.

Dressed for what?
War?
This is a law enforcement operation. Not a battleground.
I completely understand the need to detain, charge and try this man. I also understand that there's going to be a lot of animosity and deep seated hate among officers involved in the manhunt.
However, let call this what it is.
A law enforcement operation...a manhunt.
Not a war.
Given the recent stories if the militarization of local law enforcement, this is a very poor choice of words.

(6,241 posts)You've just got the wrong idea about law enforcement in 2014. It's no longer about catching a bad guy and putting him on trial. It's an occupying army now. It's about destroying the enemy.
And it's not a poor choice of words. It's how they see it. They are the good guys. Everyone that is not them, part of the brotherhood, non-cops, are either the enemy, or potential enemy.

(53,661 posts)This is actually a scenario without the cop killing an mass murder threat part, that is big thing with more people than some might imagine.
It's about being able to live in woods as a survival game, some people really make big life changes. They change their diet, get buffed, buy all the right gear, practice to stay alive for extended time in rugged terrain and woods. I've known some guys who refused to cook in their homes to make sure they didn't have a scent on their clothes to attack bears. They went out and bagged peaks every weekend and had tons of gear. They were actually very nice folks, not political. Just had this sense that *something* was going to happen and arranged their lives around it, got rid of every thing in their lives that did not do with survival.
That area is not that well populated, or so some DUers that live in the area have reported. They are afraid the might break on them.
No matter what equipment the state has, this ain't a Terminator series or Enemy of the State flick. Law enforcement does not have superman military type gear and the manpower to sweep every single inch.
Frein may also be, as a number of others have done, be monitoring their communications to keep out of reach with wireless devices. It's been reported in recent cases on DU.
There is a whole industry teaching how to make it without any civilization. This guy was not just a Cheetos eating basement dweller. His dad taught him how to shoot, and said he is a much better shot.
He practiced with others in the area as they played Eastern European war games in the woods. Some may be helping him. Yes, it's a possibility. I've seen some strange shit in life.
There are people his age who have bought into the extreme wilderness survival stuff. I've seen the websites that have been up for years teaching people how, the youtube videos of people going out hunting animals and living the woods. I've seen young people getting the gear. There's been an undercurrent of paranoia about martial law and an economic collapse that's gonna make chaos.
Some have gone way off the deep end with it, and others have cut back on tis as it's financial drain and also a strain on families when carried to extremes.
But it's been a part of American gun culture for many years, way beyond Boy Scouts in the woods, etc. It exists and I think this guy is going to be on the loose for a long time. But I hope not.
JMHO.

(28,552 posts)... they'll send 100 cops to kill him. A cop kills a man with no justification, they'll send 100 cops to cover it up.
