Connecticut high school girl killed in apparent prom dispute

Source: Reuters

By Richard Weizel

MILFORD, Connecticut Fri Apr 25, 2014 12:18pm EDT

(Reuters) - A Connecticut high school girl was killed on Friday in an attack inside the school and authorities were investigating reports that she was stabbed by a fellow student after rejecting his invitation to the prom, police said.

The victim, Maren Sanchez, 16, a junior at Jonathan Law High School in Milford, was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the 7 a.m. attack, Milford Police Chief Keith Mello told a news conference.

Mello said she was stabbed by a 16-year-old male, who is now in custody.

"There was blood on her neck. It was awful," said 16-year-old Sam Garcia, a junior at the school, as he walked home. "I saw the girl lying on the stretcher when they took her out."

My niece is a Senior at Jonathan Law.

Edited to add: She tells me the alleged attacker has a history of mental issues and didn't appear to be getting proper treatment. The victim was class president, honors student, athlete and a gifted singer. Her throat was slashed.

It was a different world then. So much violence now. I watched the video the local news station posted of her singing in a school function. Her voice was angelic, it gave me goosebumps.

There's a lot of that going around.

The young woman's accomplishments were probably why he wanted so badly for her to be his prom date. If he had a history of mental issues and wasn't getting help, he was probably not treated very well by his classmates. Having her on his arm at the prom would "show them."

When I first started reading the story I thought I wish the person involved in the stabbing had thought of this girl as someone's child and thought about how stabbing her would have affected the people she loved. She was someone's child and most likely they will be heart broken by this act.

Murderers rarely think of anything except revenge. He was a mental case, and, yes, too little help, too late. This country will continue to suffer for its lax attitude toward the mentally ill.

It doesn't help that parents are usually in denial about the mental conditions of their children. If evaluations are suggested in school years, all hell breaks loose.

No parent wants to admit that their child is defective in any way. We also need more funds spent on mental illness, especially among the young, when something might be done in time to change their path.

I suppose there's a demographic of adults stood up as children who feel the same way. On the other hand, as they're both rather annoying and very petulant, no one really give them the attention they desire-- and the cycle begins all over again for them.

Yes, the lights are on at school gymnasions, but most proms are held off campus and paid for by fund raising and parents. Did I say parents enough?

You don't ask somebody to the prom a couple hours ahead of time. Especially when it is somebody who is very popular. Especially when you *know* they already have a date with somebody else.

He knew he would be rejected before he asked because 1. it was too late to be asking and 2. because she was going with a mutual friend, whom she'd been dating for weeks.

He needed to have asked weeks earlier if he really had any expectation or hope at all.
