Poll: Most New Jersey Voters Think Christie Report Was A 'Whitewash'

Source: TPM

CATHERINE THOMPSON – APRIL 9, 2014, 7:42 AM EDT

Most New Jersey voters believe an internal investigation clearing Gov. Chris Christie (R) of any wrongdoing in the George Washington Bridge lane closing scandal was a "whitewash," according to a new poll.

A Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday found that of the 96 percent of Garden State voters who said they knew something about the so-called Bridgegate scandal, only 36 percent believed the review, conducted by lawyers representing Christie's office, was a "legitimate investigation." Fifty-six percent said the report was a "whitewash."

Additionally, the survey found 51 percent of those who knew something about Bridgegate said they believed Christie was aware of his aides' activities. Only 26 percent believed that Christie had ordered the lane closures himself, however.

The internal investigation that cleared Christie placed the blame for the traffic-snarling lane closures squarely on his former deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, and David Wildstein, a former Port Authority executive. Federal prosecutors and the New Jersey state legislature are still looking into the lane closures.

So 44% of the public thinks that the report may actually have substance?

Talk about the death of critical thinking.

only 36% thought it was legitimate. There's always the 8% who have no clue! What I'd like to know is who are the %17 of democrats who think the report is legit. on edit: (Actually reviewing the results its 17% of the 36 % who thought the report was legitimate were self-identified democrats which boils down to 83 people out of the 1,356 who were surveyed-or 6%.)

On another note, only 57% of those surveyed had heard about the Hoboken allegations, but its encouraging that if you heard about it, yiou were very likely to believe its true and that Christie had something to do with it.

One last interesting item, the director of the Quinnipiac poll, Mickey Carroll, is the father of republican state assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll who is on the legislative committee investigating Christie and has appeared on Kornacki's show several times to discuss Bridgegate.

Even if one didn't know all the facts of the case, it boggles my mind that one wouldn't be a bit skeptical of a politician investigating himself.

Well, it's a little more subtle than Nixon's "edited transcripts" of the tapes.

It's time to practice a little fat-acceptance. If Christie weren't a fat guy, this story would never have made national headlines. It is, above all, his pear-shaped physique that inspires his critics, not his lies or arrogance or cowardice or treachery.

So let up a little, folks. Give Chris a break.
