Exxon: Highly unlikely world limits fossil fuels

Source: ABC News

On the same day the world's scientists issued their latest report on climate change and the risks it poses to society, the nation's biggest oil and gas company said the world's climate policies are "highly unlikely" to stop it from selling fossil fuels far into the future.

Exxon Mobil issued a report Monday on the risks that climate change policies could pose to the value of its assets and future profitability, by coincidence on the same day as the latest paper by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a Nobel Prize-winning United Nations group assembled to assess the science and risks of climate change.

Both Exxon and its critics used IPCC research to bolster their cases.

Exxon's report was in response to the contentions of some shareholders and environmental activists that the assets underpinning the value of Exxon and other fossil fuel companies will be worth less as society restricts consumption of fossil fuels to fight climate change.

How can government tax the wind? The sun, too. How?

What taxes will build the roads if there is no fuel tax?

Fossil Fuel taxes are the most dependable and steady stream of revenue governments take. This problem is being worked on in deep, quiet, government circles.

One option is to tax the miles your electric car moves every day. That would mean an NSA type device on your car; every car. They already make them, you want one?

Solve the problem of revenue and you solve the problem of the government getting with alternative energy.

Some folks are too funny.

That this is a big problem is news to many. Indeed when people began using less gas and therefore paying less tax, governments took a hit in their accounts.

Glad to help educate you. Lord knows the world needs it.

in every form - oil, coal, natural gas - and we will ruin the environment getting to it, getting it out of the ground, processing it, and spewing by-products into the air.

Exxon and their peers own sufficient politicians globally that they are effectively untouchable.

No punishment for any of their multitude of crimes.

No fear of restraint by any major government - and using their clout in the major governments
to enforce their actions in "minor" countries (cf Chevron).

It sucks but it's not about to change - it's their ball and their make the rules.
