(46,076 posts)Slept right through it. I'm in Oakland, though, so it might not have been much way down here.

(8,559 posts)I believe there's still a free download for Earthquake 3D (the program he's using in the video), as well as a version for $15 or $20 bucks.
I bought it a couple years ago. It is pretty neat program if your into tracking earthquakes.

(20,877 posts)It seemed like it would never end!
Not sure as to how much damage but MY GOD!
Scared not only me and the cats nearly to death but the whole neighborhood was up and looking around outside, checking water heaters and the like during a huge storm nonetheless!
& recommend!!!

(36,281 posts)We were in bed, of course. It was a rolling sort of shaker, but never became uncomfortable (i.e. we never thought to dive under the table or anything). I was struck by the duration the most. It went on and on, compared to the usual sharp shocks we tend to get with lesser intensity quakes.

(20,877 posts)50 miles northwest of Ferndale = Trinidad. I realize it was out at sea but it shook and shook and shook for the longest time.
I was thanking my lucky stars that I was not living in a two-story structure. That would have been truly frightening!
Another one to chalk up to my history book of big ones -- there were two 7.0++ in this area in the early 1990's, perhaps you remember those two in the same night! Yikes!
And then there was the Loma Preita -- that sucker shook me out of SF for good. Next time around, I fear for the worst for San Francisco -- too many high rise buildings and too many buildings there that ARE NOT UP TO CODE!
Lazy/greedy landlords are well aware of this fact but they choose to ignore it. It will be too late when it becomes a reality for them.

(36,281 posts)Hanging pots and pans clattered pretty loudly, but nothing came off of shelves or counter tops. We're doing some maintenance work on one room of the house so there are 3-4 foot piles of books all over the house, waiting to go back onto shelves, and none of those piles fell over. It actually felt more gentle than most 4.5 - 5.5 quakes we've had over the years. No sharp shock at all this time, just prolonged rolling shakes.

Very different to the sharp shock of the ones from the time I lived in Southern California.
