Ukraine crisis: Crimea military base stand-off 'ends'
Source: BBC
Pro-Russian soldiers are reported to have stormed a Ukrainian military base outside the Crimean city of Sevastopol, before withdrawing soon afterwards.
A BBC correspondent saw two lorries from Russia's Black Sea Fleet outside the gates, surrounded by armed men.
But no shots are believed to have been fired, and the assailants and lorries reportedly left after "negotiations"

There were two military lorries with Russian number plates outside the gates, surrounded by irregular soldiers and a very hostile crowd of pro-Russian demonstrators, our correspondent adds.
Two journalists who attempted to take photographs were beaten badly.
Later, a Ukrainian officer told a Daily Telegraph journalist that the stand-off had ended after the "talks", and that the Russian lorries and about 30 to 60 Russians troops had withdrawn.

(101,400 posts)help defend Crimea from "hoards of neo-nazi, nationalists that were en-route from Ukraine"? Your hordes are imaginary. What Russian citizens? Crimea is part of Ukraine, not Russia. If the Russian troops wanted to defend Russian citizens, they should be in Russia, where the citizens are. And you don't protect anyone by beating up journalists. Yours is one of the most bizarre claims I've seen from a long-term DUer - on any subject.

As far as the "Yours is one of the most bizarre claims I've seen from a long-term DUer - on any subject. "...
Right back at you. I'm appalled and saddened by those just drooling to go to war the Russia over a piece of land we have no interest in.

(6,241 posts)what would happen if there was an attempt to arrest these invaders for trespassing? Don't shoot them. Would that be an act of war greater than blowing past a barricade and invading a military base. Any reasonable person would expect to be arrested if they did that. Crimea is still under Ukraine jurisdiction until and unless the referendum goes through. They have the right to have military bases there.

(35,383 posts)So Sebastopol announced elections on 3/17 or 3/18. I forget the precise date.
Then the city council voted unilaterally to join Russia.
The Ukrainian court in Kiev ruled the city council out of line. No enforcement mechanism, does anybody care?
Aksyonov and his group declared that Ukrainian troops in the Crimea are "occupiers." Does that make them occupiers? If so, then they're squatters, an invading force and should be driven out. If not, then this was an assault by fascist invaders on a Ukrainian military base.
Or perhaps Aksyonov has no legitimacy? After all, the "not quite Russians" moved in, parliament met, and a couple of hours later a minor politician in a mostly ignored political party suddenly was appointed in charge. The only thing that seems to matter was the close alignment between the troops' and Aksyonov's views--that his political platform was precisely reunification with Russia, while pro-Russian troops were outside the room. Pacificistically holding assault rifles.
