‘Catastrophic’ Ice Storm Forecast To Hit Southeast United States

ATLANTA The Southeast prepared to be swaddled in a paralyzing blanket of ice and snow that could leave huge chunks of the region in the dark for days, just two weeks after another storm that hobbled Atlanta.
Parts of northern Georgia saw snow Tuesday morning, and the chilly rain that was falling further south was expected to become ice overnight. Aaron Strickland, the head of emergency operations for Georgia Power, said the company expects that ice between half an inch to an inch in some parts of the state to snap tree limbs and knock down power lines that serve hundreds of thousands of customers.
Some of those should be prepared to be without power for several days, he said.
This has the opportunity to be a huge event when youre talking about the amount of ice youre looking at, Strickland told reporters Tuesday afternoon.

Only fair, the southern utilities sent crews up to us over Christmas after our ice storm.

(15,882 posts)flashlights would be nice too. Candles are good, but people are always burning their house down in ice storms, so watch that.
Water: 1-2 gallons a day per adult, plus another 10 or so for washing, flushing (just pour a bucket into the toilet - it will flush itself), and DON'T FORGET WATER FOR YOUR PETS, PLEASE
Stay warm.

(9,298 posts)for too many folks all over the country. In Los Angeles where leaves are still falling like it's October, true enough we have a drought. But we are nowhere near suffering cold, ice, snow, power outages, etc. other regions are. My heart goes out to people (and animals!) who are struggling each and every day. May spring come quickly this year.

(8,515 posts)When it gets to freezing here, we all suffer. We are just so not used to it. Agree with you, Spring can't get here fast enough, but then we have to worry about heat and hurricanes. Ah well, as someone very popular once said "it's always something." Still love you Gilda Radnor! Am I right? Do you spell her name "Gilda"?

(30,151 posts)When it hit DFW in beginning of December we got double screwed because our really late fall left the trees full of leaves--
probably at least tripled the weight on branches- Everyone I know lost some---
Thanks to the city of Plano for moving the huge 30 footer that broke off one of mine out of the street at 5:00 in the morning

(11,552 posts)Two weeks ago the bad stuff hit mid-day and many of us couldn't even get home (I had to hike to a motel where I spent 2 days - don't even get me going about our state govt's ineptness). This time at least everyone here has been able to make it home before shit hits the fan. Still, this storm has me worried. I've got my generator ready to go, we have plenty of food in the house, I even parked our cars in the road so they're not under trees, so we'll just have to hang out and see what happens.

(11,552 posts)I just went out to check on everything and there's over a half inch of solid ice on the roads. Thankfully we still have power, I hear a lot of people aren't so lucky.
