Strongest wind forecast in years battering parts of Midlands

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Nancy Gaarder

The strong winds that are expected to make life difficult Thursday in the Omaha area are among the worst forecast in years in the region.

A daylong high-wind warning has been issued from the Canadian border to northern Kansas and from the Wyoming border through Iowa.

Sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts of between 50 and 60 mph are expected within that area.

In eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, two periods of particularly strong gusts are forecast, said Rick Chermok, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
