I'm surpsrised. He's pissed.
Nice backbone Mr. President.

(9,762 posts)Stand firm. This coming from someone who depends on that absent federal worker check. Don't care, I value democracy far above my own well-being and I bet everyone else feels that way too.

(18,652 posts)Not that the repukes would care but that would devastate the city. The mayor is asking Congress to be allowed to spend DC's own money collected through DC taxes and Congress won't let the city do that. Heaven forbid a diverse city like DC be allowed to spend its own money without Big (White, Republican) Brother giving the say so.

(15,696 posts)One commenter wrote that maybe we should suffer a default now, in order to keep it from ever happening again. Part of me agrees, but I hate to see anyone hurt now when this could be avoided if repukes would do the right thing.

(7,549 posts)That's it in a nutshell. On one hand maybe it is what we need to wake some of the hard heads up, I am speaking John
Q. Public here. It is rotten, however, that the Pukes are punishing everybody just because of their stupidity, their egos, and their endless greed.
humbled_opinion
(4,423 posts)when the legacy of a default will squarely belong to President Obama? Legacy never blames a Congress it always is associated with the Leader at the time. I just can't see the President taking that chance. Another point I find hard to digest is this notion that debt ceilings are not used as negotiation tools by the Congress, Obama himself voted against raising it during Bush's term, his vote than was an effort to negotiate the end of the Iraq war, so it just strikes me as sounding hollow to say these things... Maybe I am wrong, I welcome the debate.

(81,722 posts)Glad you're here! Many of us feel as you do. President Obama gave in to the infants and sniveling brats WAY too many times during his first term, in an attempt to keep the peace, and all they did in response was stamp their little feet and scream and protest and bitch and complain and demand more. As a parent, he really should have known better. That's not how you raise children - by giving in when they throw temper tantrums. It is VERY nice, and very encouraging and re-energizing to see he's snapped out of it and come to his senses. These republi-CONS need to be treated as exactly what they ARE: spoiled-brat, over-coddled, poorly-raised/disciplined snot-nosed three-year-olds in adult suits.

(4,795 posts)Especially if they take a risk. If the Republicans are not given an opportunity to save face and spin something--if they didn't know before they started they would at least get something--they will be unlikely to just cave. Think about it folks. Without some weak bone they can hold up to their minions, they very well might take it over the cliff. I didn't think so before because I assumed the concessions were already pre-agreed upon (and they still might be)
hooverville29
(163 posts)Yes, ordinarily, seasoned Washington types would seek a way that every one could find ground to stand on and claim a 'common-good' compromise. Not anymore. People have developed a video game mentality. Zap--zap--hit--hit--obliterate 'em--win--win. And that's not just politicians. It's all of us. Pogo's comment has come alive -- 'I've met the enemy and they is us.'
Will our form of government survive this? Probably in form, but I doubt it will in substance.
NoOneMan

(32,208 posts)I would think you would know that as you are here posting at Democratic Underground.
And don't pretend to be all "in the know" - I lived and worked in the beltway for 15 years myself and so do (or did) many others on this site.
We are not giving in to terrorist behavior & thankfully neither is the president.
You don't have a clue yet if you're giving in to this. That's not up to you. Your job is to send money and vote. Your involvement and knowledge stops beyond that.
Beyond that, however you construe their behavior, its a damn lot of political capital to spend without getting anything at all in return. If we acknowledge that, all I am saying, is that it makes the possibility of default that much more likely. Im not making excuses for anything, but just observing that political process.
My prediction still stands: everyone in the country will shit their pants and an eleventh hour deal of austerity will be reached (shock doctrine). Thats the SOPs of today and it seems like everyone is going through the motions to make that shit happen. If for some reason the Republicans cave with nothing in return (best of all scenarios) lets say Ill be pleasantly surprised. But I am cynical enough to think politics are far too much of a cooperative dog and pony show to make that likely

(26,549 posts)Oh right, Boehner claimed he got 98% of what he wanted, and they held the government hostage again this year.

(4,795 posts)I suggested that this might make republicans dig their heels in. Thats all. Thats life. Im not here to come up with plans
jeff47
(26,549 posts)Your claim is that without a face-saving thing, the Republicans would completely destroy the economy.
The implied plan is the Democrats must provide such a face-saving thing. Unless you're particularly fond of destroying the economy.

(4,795 posts)So I gotta wonder why the Republicans are so confidant. Haha.
Im not saying to do anything. Im just watching. Kind of interesting.
What's your position? Just let them fold or embrace the default? Just curious
jeff47
(26,549 posts)use one of the work arounds.
1) Ignore the law. What are they gonna do, impeach? Never get a conviction.
2) Platinum coin - mint a $1T coin, deposit it in the fed. Spend money. When they realize they've lost and raise the limit, withdraw and melt the coin to avoid the worst of the inflationary effects.
3) "Conflicting laws" - Budget/CR and debt limit are in direct conflict. You can't follow one without breaking the other. So announce you're following the budget, and ask Congress to "clarify" - it's what was done in the past when Congress passed conflicting laws.
I prefer #3. But it requires a budget or CR.
I know the White House has claimed none of these would work, but they have to claim none of these will work or the Republicans would just demagogue right through the limit.
NoOneMan
(4,795 posts)I wasn't considering that would happen. Might be the only option left. These next few weeks will be interesting.

(63 posts)Better to squeeze a long term deal out of them while they are so fractured and with so many money masters on the Right squealing for no debt ceiling drama. POTUS will win on this issue (along with the entire nation).
Great Job Mister President!

(3,517 posts)Louisiana Rep. John Fleming (R) took issue with the idea that Republicans were conceding in the battle with Democrats and the president by offering a clean six-week extension of the debt limit. Really, he argued, they weren't giving in at all -- just moving the goal posts.
"All we're doing is saying the president hasn't come toward us, we'll just move the deadline out and offer it again," Fleming told reporters Thursday.
"We haven't changed our position, only the timeline," he said, emphasizing the President Barack Obama must negotiate on opening the government and a longer-term debt extension. "There won't be a vote on a temporary extension of the debt limit unless the president agrees this afternoon to sit down and talk with us."

(116,188 posts)It was a totally bullshit "offer." In fact, it was a setup, and fortunately Obama was smart enough to see that and tell them where to stick it.
hooverville29
(163 posts)-- Paulo Ryan was quoted in the same story as saying --
We put an offer on the table, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), chairman of the House Budget Committee, told reporters. Obama didnt say yes; he didnt say no, Ryan said. Were continuing to negotiate this evening.
2banon
(7,321 posts)on through out the night. In fact, on PBS News Hour, it was stated that ACA is off the table in terms of negotiations, but that "entitlements" (READ Social Security) reductions were going to be ON the table and was up for negotiating.
I hope that prediction/forecast is wrong... but I have a really sick feeling in my stomach right now.

(9,791 posts)The Repubs need to get serious and short term deals aren't serious. They're just buying time to try to figure out what it is that they really want now that Obamacare is off the table. In my opinion the Repubs never expected the Dems to stand firm and not cave like they always did. They need to get the government cranking again and pay their damned bills with no strings attached and behave like adults.
