Report: Protesters throw shoes at Rouhani convoy

Source: ITV

Iranian hardliners have reportedly thrown shoes at the convoy of President Rouhani, as he returned to Tehran after his trip to the UN headquarters in New York.

Thomas Erdbink, Tehran bureau chief for the New York Times, tweeted that around 75 protesters threw shoes and eggs at the president.

It comes after Rouhani spoke with US President Barack Obama on the phone - the first direct contact between leaders of the two countries since 1979.

Rouhani was trying to keep smiling but security people tried to shield him off with an umbrella, then pulled him into car and drove off.

I am sure it was not pretty.

Possibly they were too absorbed in praising Cruz to even respond to this.

The hardliners don't like diplomacy, because they know what that means for their continued survival. If the US is opening discussions, if the US drops the sanctions, then they lose, and they know it.

Iran is not a super fundamentalist state, they try to push it and yes there are tragic instances of some more debased behavior (hanging of gay individuals) in the city life there are underground pockets of westner-style consumerism.

The youth are energized and networked with the world. The intellectual movement, once thriving and constitutional, is making a comeback.
I'm almost embarrassed to admit it, but I keep thinking about the great literature that is going to once again flow out of Iran.

From the Sleeping Earth

won't speak to you
Of the earth sleeping in the rain.
For me, the praise of earth,
Is like disobeying the rain of your house
Since in winter also,
Near your window
I didn't tremble from the cold.
When I open the window
The shops hid in steam
No longer look ugly to me.
Believe me
I'm indebted to you
These days
For seeing my heart in the mirror.
You know my name,
And I cannot claim
Another name
For myself.

Again from the Sky...

The sky is blue again,
It is covered by black lines
Tomorrow
I must bestow you to scattered fragmented words.
A brown line on the plane tree
Belongs to the sun,
It is a full brown line
Resembling your tresses,
Which makes human survival on earth
More exuberant.

Around here, a sole is a sole and a shoe is a shoe.

They seem to have special (insulting) meaning in parts of the Arab world.

Anyone know the meaning/significance?

The bottom of one's shoes isn't supposed to be shown to another person.

I'm waiting for a Republican house member to throw their shoes at the president. Shouldn't be too long until it happens. Don't expect the MSM to report it though (other than saying the Dems caused it).

Muslims wash their feet for that reason. It's the dirtiest / lowliest part of the body / being. It literally is as low as you can go.

Eggs are nasty but shoes, they're a whole other ballpark. It'd be like flinging shit or something. Worst possible insult.

Sometimes, I feel like throwing shoes and eggs at our politicians!

In the USA we would be arrested and thrown in jail for a long time for that action.

All we can do is call their offices, and complain, protest or yell at them if we see them in public and bitch at them on social media.

Many of our politicians ignore those actions.

Iranians cheer, protest over Rouhani's historic phone call with Obama

By Marcus George
DUBAI | Sat Sep 28, 2013 10:25am EDT

(Reuters) - Hundreds of Iranians cheered President Hassan Rouhani on his return from New York on Saturday after his historic phone call with U.S. President Barack Obama but a smaller number of hardliners shouted "Death to America" and threw eggs and shoes at his official car leaving the airport, Iranian media reported.

If the hardliners physically attack their president then that president is a real, substantial threat to them.

Please dear world, don't fuck up this opportunity.

Kick the teabaggers out, one country at a time. Support this kind of politician who dares to go up against the fundamentalists - then you may actually succeed at promoting freedom (and possibly democracy, further down the line).
