(Koch Carbon) Controversial piles of pet coke heading out of Michigan

Source: Detroit Free Press

Controversial piles of petroleum coke stored along the Detroit River may soon become a memory — for the time being, at least.

A spokesman for Koch Carbon, the owner of the pet coke stored along the river, confirmed the piles are leaving Michigan for another, undisclosed state. Months of public outcry over the riverside piles, however, isn’t motivating the move.

“Koch Carbon has made a business decision to store purchases of petroleum coke from Marathon Petroleum at another port outside the state of Michigan,” Koch Carbon spokesman Paul Baltzer said in an e-mailed statement. “This decision was made to meet our shipment needs.”

The Marathon Detroit Refinery off South Fort Street last year completed a more than $2-billion expansion to allow for increased refining of heavy Canadian crude oil. Pet coke is a byproduct of tar sands oil refining that is used as a relatively inexpensive, though dirty-burning, fuel. Marathon spokeswoman Stefanie Griffith said officials at the refinery “have been working with our customer, Koch Carbon” on the issue of pet coke storage and shipment.

even a private party could hire test labs to pull samples and test. Ask the EPA to test water, air and soil or when the last tests were? That factory has been there for a longtime.

10. yes, that's why some private person has to test the water and look for the junk on the riverbed.

7. it's all clear to me now: Detroit bankruptcy + Koch pet piles = lack of penalties, fines

NOW I see the Grand Plan of Detroit Bankruptcy.

What better way to avoid high fines than by getting Detroit to declare bankruptcy and be in total turmoil about pensions owed and keeping city services running? That way, not many will complain. Certainly a city in turmoil is not going to have these carcinogenic pet piles as a top priority while they're going bankrupt.

Note that piles 4 stories high were brought onto the Detroit R. banks without permits. The Kochs apparently thought they could get away with it, no doubt due to their bankruptcy scam.

Calling Eric Holder and Obama. Unfortunately, I'm afraid they're asleep at the switch. Obama is planning his arms to the Syrian rebels and Holder is busting medical marijuana users
