Referee beheaded after killing player

Source: ESPN

An amateur football match in Brazil led to two deaths as a referee was beheaded by spectators after he had stabbed a player.

The shocking incidents occurred in Maranhao, Brazil, last Sunday. According to reports, referee Otavio Jordao da Silva fatally stabbed footballer Josenir dos Santos Abreu.

Dos Santos Abreu is believed to have struck the referee after questioning a decision. In retaliation, Jordao da Silva stabbed the player.

Having witnessed the incident, an outraged group of spectators turned on the referee. He was tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered. They then put his head on a stake and planted it in the middle of the pitch.

Lots of brazilians are upset at the economic conditions their people are living in, and then they see the government doling out so much money for these international sporting events... FIFA is part of what the Brazilians are protesting about.

Of course, holy shit, this is fucking off-the-wall, and almost certainly in no way connected to those protests...

I wouldn't call it quartering in the medieval sense; they did chop off arms and legs at the elbows and knees, and his head was chopped off.

In this video, it seems that staff are attempting to sew him back together, possibly as a matter of respect to the corpse.

Like much of South America, there is great disparity of wealth between areas and the poorer ones have a lack of law enforcement and more lawlessness.

Not to disparage the poor or anything, if anything it is more of an indictment of the rich in these nations.

The world cup and Olympics are going to happen in the the richer, safer areas for sure.

but i think part of why they could do it was exactly because it was a group.

In some ways the guilt/hesitation gets diminished since it allows the mind to rationale that it was not 'your' decision but the collective groups which makes a person capable of doing something (s)he normally wouldn't(does that make sense?)

...but out of regard for 'human decency' treasonous women were burnt at the stake. Ah, those decorous English.

I guess that for rabid soccer fans, assault on a favorite player is akin to treason.

From Wikipedia, Hanged, drawn and quartered:

To be hanged, drawn and quartered was a penalty in England for men convicted of high treason, in use from 1351 although first recorded during the reigns of Henry III (1216–1272) and Edward I (1272–1307). Convicts were fastened to a hurdle, or wooden panel, and dragged by horse to the place of execution, where they were hanged (almost to the point of death), emasculated, disemboweled (drawn), beheaded and quartered (chopped into four pieces). Their remains were often displayed in prominent places across the country, such as London Bridge. For reasons of public decency, women convicted of high treason were instead burnt at the stake.

<snip>

Although the Act of Parliament defining high treason remains on the United Kingdom's statute books, during a long period of 19th-century legal reform the sentence of hanging, drawing and quartering was changed to drawing, hanging until dead, and posthumous beheading and quartering, before being abolished in England in 1870. The death penalty for treason was abolished in 1998.

<snip>

Hanging, drawing and quartering was abolished in England by the Forfeiture Act 1870, Liberal politician Charles Forster's second attempt since 1864 to end the forfeiture of a felon's lands and goods (thereby not making paupers of his family). The Act also limited the penalty for treason to hanging alone, although it did not remove the monarch's right under the 1814 Act to replace hanging with beheading. The death penalty for treason was abolished by the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, enabling the UK to ratify protocol six of the European Convention on Human Rights in 1999.

Jul 2013

"Her prayers being ended, the executioners, kneeling, desired her Grace to forgive them her death: who answered, 'I forgive you with all my heart, for now, I hope, you shall make an end of all my troubles.' Then they, with her two women, helping her up, began to disrobe her of her apparel: then she, laying her crucifix upon the stool, one of the executioners took from her neck the Agnus Dei, which she, laying hands off it, gave to one of her women, and told the executioner, he should be answered money for it. Then she suffered them, with her two women, to disrobe her of her chain of pomander beads and all other apparel most willingly, and with joy rather than sorrow, helped to make unready herself, putting on a pair of sleeves with her own hands which they had pulled off, and that with some haste, as if she had longed to be gone.

All this time they were pulling off her apparel, she never changed her countenance, but with smiling cheer she uttered these words,'that she never had such grooms to make her unready, and that she never put off her clothes before such a company..... Then, groping for the block, she laid down her head, putting her chin over the block with both her hands, which, holding there still, had been cut off had they not been espied. Then lying upon the block most quietly, and stretching out her arms cried, In manus tuas, Domine, etc., three or four times. Then she, lying very still upon the block, one of the executioners holding her slightly with one of his hands, she endured two strokes of the other executioner with an axe, she making very small noise or none at all, and not stirring any part of her from the place where she lay: and so the executioner cut off her head, saving one little gristle, which being cut asunder, he lift up her head to the view of all the assembly and bade God save the Queen. Then, her dress of lawn [i.e. wig] from off her head, it appeared as grey as one of threescore and ten years old, polled very short, her face in a moment being so much altered from the form she had when she was alive, as few could remember her by her dead face. Her lips stirred up and a down a quarter of an hour after her head was cut off."
