Coup topples Egypt's Morsy; deposed president under 'house arrest'
Source: CNN
Egypt's military toppled the country's first democratically elected president Wednesday night and reportedly put him under house arrest while rounding up some of his top supporters even as the deposed Mohamed Morsy insisted that he remains the country's legitimate leader.

The military has not publicly commented on Morsy's whereabouts. But Muslim Brotherhood spokesman Gehad El-Haddad told CNN the deposed president was under "house arrest" at the presidential Republican Guard officer's club in Cairo. He said some members of Morsy's inner circle have also put under house arrest.

(6,045 posts)And it must be nice to sit up on high probably in the safety of a Western country like America & dictate what is & is not a failure...Good thing you were not around when our country was trying to get on its feet after the British left!!
The Egyptian people have tasted freedom & they are not going to stop until get the government they want...Something I used to think we "Liberals" stood for but I have learned since the start of the Arab spring that this is not the case for every "Liberal". SAD!!

I've seen this happen before--not from the "safety of a Western country" but from downtown Esfahan, Iran--so I know of what I speak.
No one wants the Egyptian people to get the government they want more than me--my point--one year ago, and it stands today-- was that Morsi was not the guy. He was a "drag 'em backward" guy, not a "move forward together" guy.
So, speaking of nice, you have a nice day.

In many countries, Turkey being one of them, Egypt another, the military is not held in low esteem. They are regarded as professionals who know their duty.

The Egyptian prosecutor's office ordered the arrest of the organisation's leader, Mohamed Badie, and his deputy Khairat el-Shater, who was the group's prime candidate to run in the 2012 presidential election. He had to step down because of past convictions, paving the way for Morsi's candidature.
