Inspector general: Ineffective management at IRS allowed agents to target tea party groups

UPDATED: 5:33 PM ET
WASHINGTON (AP) A government watchdog is blaming ineffective management at the Internal Revenue Service for allowing agents to improperly target tea party groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax exempt status.
In an upcoming report, the Treasury inspector general for tax administration says lax management allowed the practice to go on for 18 months. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the report ahead of its release.
The IRS on Friday apologized for targeting tea party as well as other conservative groups.
The report said that when asked by investigators, IRS supervisors said the criteria they used to decide which groups they examined were not influenced by people or organizations outside the IRS.

(2,593 posts)they cannot (or will not) do anything constructive. This makes them look like they're doing something. I hope, come election time, voters will realize that the only activity the Republicans have any interest in are investigations and obstruction. I know I've had an ass load of it.

There will be more junk coming out (believe that) cause the corporate media parrots everything the GOPers say.

Benghazi has been debunked, the IRS fake outrage is being debunked now that we know they also investigated liberal groups too, and as far the AP investigation that was a criminal probe and Holder/Obama will not be held responsible.

are right and I suspect the low level employees were following directives given by their higher ups. I think the DOJ should investigate and see what the real deal was instead of depending on this report. It would be interesting if the DOJ comes up with a different opinion from the IG and Republican hearings in Congress if there are any. They've describe this as a criminal investigation so the Congress can't intefere with it. We still have not heard the side of the low level employees. By the DOJ entering it they will get a fair hearing. Let the Congress and Media continue to throw their dirt around and see what sticks to the Administration. I think it was very convenient for Lerner to suddenly apologize when she knew about this one year ago. And she was appointed during the Bush Administration. This stuff was going on when Bush appointees were in charge, not just when the acting commissioner took charge. Let them do their investigations and let the DOJ do theirs. I think the real truth will come out.
