WASHINGTON - After a previously unannounced war zone visit over the weekend, Sen. Deb Fischer left Afghanistan upbeat about progress in training and equipping Afghan security forces.
In an interview Monday from an air base in Italy, the Nebraska Republican told the World-Herald that she and the other senators on the trip received numerous briefings from U.S. and international military commanders on the ground.
Fischer had previously questioned whether a 2014 withdrawal timeline could be met, but she said Monday she now thinks it's possible.
"The message was pretty positive - that the Afghan troops are going to be ready to take over and monitor the situation there in their country when the United States and the international forces leave," Fischer said. "So that was good to hear."
