Gun-Rights Advocate: Background Checks Provide ‘False Security’

Source: TPM

PEMA LEVY 9:27 AM EST, SUNDAY JANUARY 13, 2013

Larry Pratt, executive director of Gun Owners of America, said Sunday that he opposed universal background checks for gun purchases because they only created a false sense of security but wouldn't stop mass shootings. "We're wasting our time going in that direction," Pratt said.

"I think it's a false security to think that somehow we're going to spot problems when there's really no way spot these problems," Pratt said on "Fox News Sunday." "Some of the most horrendous of the mass murders that have occurred recently, including the one in Newtown, would not have been stopped by a background check. The gun is stolen, the person has no prior criminal record."

Instead, Pratt suggested getting rid of gun-free zones.

3. He's right. So let's get rid of the guns

Mr and Ms. America, turn 'em in. Start with a total ban and let's see how it goes. Enough with predicting the effects of various types of legislation. Let's make it empirical. Ban first, work out the details later.

Break the eggs, make the damn omelet already.

Start your drive to repeal the 2nd Amendment. Tell me how that goes.

I am afraid that all you (and the rest of the proponents of unconstitutional bans here) will accomplish is to drive southern voters like most of my neighbors further into the arms of the Republican party. So 'thanks' (not!) in advance for helping to keep Virginia Foxx as my rep. Every two years I vote against her. With this gun issue floating about though, I'm not sure that anyone should even bother trying to unseat her in 2014.

Especially when one consider the fact that 30% of all guns used in crimes can be traced back to gun shows, where 40% of the vendors are unlicensed, and do not conduct any background checks.

"There are approximately 5,000 gun shows every year across the United States and 40% of sales at these shows are by unlicensed sellers who are not required to perform background checks. "

"One ATF study found that over 10,000 crime guns traced in a year were connected to gun shows – about 30% of all crime guns traced that year."

6. Just like seat belts don't stop all auto deaths
Sun Jan 13, 2013, 11:18 AM
Jan 2013

But they do REDUCE auto deaths. They're just one additional thing we do to reduce auto deaths, like better brakes, better steering, roads with slopes engineered to reduce loss of control, demanding folks have drivers licenses, etc.

We CAN reduce gun deaths; I know of no one who believes we can entirely prevent ALL gun deaths, but, with many changes to our policies, we can reduce them.

Let's see .... brakes on a car don't prevent all accidents. Neither do seat belts, windshield wipers or headlights. I guess we should stop requiring them on our cars. We should only require the one thing that will prevent ALL accidents ..... Wait. If someone is going to hit my car and I hit their car, I can prevent them from hitting more cars. So more cars will prevent accidents. Problem solved.

They should ban all manufacture of guns and ammo in the US.
Then then NRA would go away.

even if you think you are super human while holding it. Not everyone knows how to contol themselves at a sport event, let alone in an emotional show down. Assault weapons should NOT be in the hands of anyone irrational with a mental medical history or criminal record. Period. I hope it passes by a landslide. Get the money OUT of government so we can get something done for the other 99% of Americans. This is bullshit.

cars that have them.

So, yeah, let's not have them.

Thus, you gun advocates that feel the way of the original article, just disable your air bags and don't wear seat belts.
