Grandson says Carter is 'coming to the end' in brief update about former president's health

Source: CNN Politics

Updated 4:27 PM EDT, Tue May 14, 2024

CNN — Jimmy Carter’s grandson said Tuesday that the former president is “coming to the end” in a brief update about the 39th president’s health.

“(My grandfather) is doing OK,” Jason Carter said at a mental health forum named in honor of his grandmother, the late former first lady Rosalynn Carter, at the Carter Center. “He has been in hospice, as you know, for almost a year and a half now, and he really is, I think, coming to the end that, as I’ve said before, there’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end and I think he has been there in that space.”

Jimmy Carter, now 99, became the oldest living president in history after George H.W. Bush died in 2018 at the age of 94. He has survived metastatic brain cancer, liver cancer and a number of health scares, including brain surgery after a fall in 2019. He entered hospice care in February 2023 after a series of hospital stays and made a rare public appearance to attend his wife’s memorial service back in November.

“My grandmother’s passing was a difficult moment for all of us, including my grandfather,” Jason Carter said Tuesday. But, he added, “The outpouring of love and support that we, as a family, received from people in this room and from the rest of the world was so remarkable and meaningful to us. And it really turned that whole process into a celebration.”

He is an example of how human beings should act and think toward others.

Some will remember that I have a list of people who make me proud to be from GA. He is at the top of the list.

My heart is breaking already in anticipation of all the ugliness and hatred that will come spewing out of the MAGAts. Decency is the one thing they can't stand. But we will honor him.

I never trusted him. But he was pretty good at reading the script placed in front of him. Always and ever The Actor. With SOOOOOOO many people around him protecting and running interference for him.

I NEVER EVER saw the appeal, OR was taken in by it. My dad thought he was the Second Coming. He’d tease me at the dinner table: “well, whaddya think of Reagan now?” And I’d say “Dad, please. We’re trying to eat here.”

GOOD one, ArkansasDemocrat1!

And I, too, expect him to be a no-show. If he’s not the star of the show, he won’t be interested. Which will be a good thing. I don’t want him there.

I missed the age cutoff for voting against Nixon by less than two months. I was on active duty when the next election rolled around, so I sent in an absentee ballot via snail mail (a term whose time had not yet arrived). I proudly cast my first vote for James Earl Carter for President of the United States.

was too burned when he lost to JB that he could not respect the peoples’ choice in 2020. Instead he spread lies and spitefully stayed away during President Biden’s Inauguration. So it follows that Trump lacking greatness next to two great patriots- He has no place or seat anywhere near President Carter’s catafalque when the time comes.
