Matt Gaetz gets last-minute primary challenger

Source: Axios

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) got a last-minute primary challenger for his seat as allies of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) look to exact revenge on the eight lawmakers who voted to oust the California Republican last fall.

Why it matters: McCarthy-aligned former naval aviator Aaron Dimmock filed to run against Gaetz on Friday, just ahead of the Sunshine State's deadline.

  • McCarthy allies are expected to spend heavily in the race.
  • The Florida primary is set to take place on Aug. 20.

  • The intrigue: Gaetz and McCarthy have long had a contentious relationship, with Gaetz having led the efforts to strip McCarthy of his gavel.

  • McCarthy and his allies have been working to recruit primary challengers for those who supported the ouster.
  • McCarthy — who resigned from his seat in December — has repeatedly accused Gaetz of leading the push for a motion to vacate over a House Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz over allegations of sexual misconduct.

  • Gaetz has denied the investigation is the reason he moved to oust McCarthy, and he took aim at his new primary opponent on social media.

We can make bets and everything.

I don't care who knocks Gaetz out of the House but somebody has to. I can't abide that little weasel. His district is about as Alabama as Florida gets, meaning it is unlikely to vote for a Democrat, no matter what a scummy son of a bitch the Republicans have come up with. Likely the best we can do is getting him kicked out in the primary, and having a last minute challenger is beautiful strategy, giving him little time to organize a smear campaign.

So pass the popcorn while we watch the fun. With any luck at all, Gaetz will soon be on the unemployment line, spending the rest of his life running for every office he can and being elected to none, nobody likes a grown ass man who goes after teenagers, even if the teenagers are on the game.

    Something I didn't see coming.

I don't say this often, but, "Yay, Republicans!"

And let's stop with the "what's the point in supporting a longshot" excuse. Even if they don't win, eventually the Democrats get higher voting percentages in subsequent elections.

    6. I'd love to see a Dem ride a blue tsunami wave in Matty-tat's district.

It's in the panhandle which is redder than the square in Moscow. Having Gaetz remain in congress as a minority member - constantly stirring shit with his caucus - he personifies repub character...self-serving perverts.
