Top Democrats confident 'blue wall' in Midwest will save Biden

Source: The Hill

Top Democrats acknowledge that President Biden won’t win this year by the same Electoral College landslide he won by in 2020, conceding that winning in Arizona and Georgia will be tough given Biden’s low approval rating. But Democrats are counting on what’s called the “blue wall” in the Midwest: Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, where Biden has seen an uptick in polling numbers and where his effort to rebuild domestic manufacturing is most likely to pay off.

Democrats say their top issue — abortion rights — also resonates especially strongly in those three states, adding to what they see as Biden’s advantage there.

“It was critical in 2020, it was critical in ’16,” Senate Democratic Policy and Communications Committee Chair Debbie Stabenow (Mich.) said of the Democrats’ blue wall in the upper Midwest. Stabenow said Biden’s focus on “onshoring” or bringing back American manufacturing jobs will be a top selling point of his reelection campaign in her home state.

“The CEO of U.S. Steel has called in a manufacturing renaissance. We’re bringing jobs back. Basically, the Biden administration is doing everything that others including Donald Trump have talked about but were never really serious about doing,” she said. “President Biden is aiming right at the middle class: Particularly, bringing jobs home. Rebuild America. You tackle costs, you take on the drug companies. Made in America,” she added.

As a note, Pennsylvania is NOT "Midwest" (we're 50 miles from the Atlantic Ocean here in Philly).

It used to be "so solid that they should hold even in a tough year"

Apparently - it now includes "We're behind but we have reason to hope if our latest efforts prove fruitful"

You easterners - Philly / Bucks / Allentowners - you're a different breed in the other end of the state.

I lived on Philly for ten years, and went to school in Ohio and went to Pittsburgh multiple times to watch football games. They are different once you get to Harrisburg/Carlisle area

We joke about Philly in the east, Pittsburgh in the west, and Alabama in between.

I have voted blue in every national, state, and local election since I moved here. I think that only a few up-ballot politician (Pres/VP, Governor, & recently Senator) have actually won. None of the local votes have gone blue since 2005 at least not that I can recall.

Lots of nice things about the area. Politics is not one of them.

15. I went camping near Carlisle about 30 years ago with some work folks

We had a blast! The people in the area were really friendly. We got one of the campsites where we pitched tents and cooked over a fire pit (the place also had RVs/campers and cabins). Had to dig deep for my old Girl Scout training from decades before. On the way there we saw some Amish horse and buggies in a mall parking lot. lol

This was the place - in Gardners, PA (looks like they really expanded it since I was there) - https://mountaincreekcamping.com/

It starts to transition over there. Have been to Pittsburgh a bunch of times as well as OH (a BIL and his family are from Dayton and he still has siblings there).

An "artificial" border between PA and NJ is the only thing that "psychologically" keeps us from being called "coastal".

where every state that voted to include a state Constitutional amendment to make abortion legal - either red or blue, voted to do so.

2024 is night and day different from 2016.

We don't want a repeat of 2016. And 2020 was too close for comfort. Every vote matters.

PA is microcosm of America since Western PA is like Ohio or West Virginia. Philly is very much an east coast city. That's my home state where I grew up. There are many reasons why I peaced out as soon as I turned 18

13. The Democratic party voter registration in Arizona and Georgia has grown since 2020

And Democrats won by increasing margins in statewide elections. Believe the data, not the polls. He'll carry Arizona and Georgia and there's a good chance he'll add Florida and North Carolina.

From 2020 (election day) to 2024 (March) , the number of registered Democrats has fallen by almost 180k, while the number of registered Republicans climbed by 72k.

I haven't found Georgia - but I don't think they register by party. So I'm not sure what gave you that impression.

14. IIRC, first time I heard about a "blue wall" from MSM was early November 2016

More like blue cardboard in a rainstorm. If we're relying on that "blue wall" to eke out a close win, we've already lost.

Fortunately, I think the turnout models the polling outfits are using severely underestimate the impact of anti-choice cruelty on the electorate. We might just see some interesting surprises on the east coast before we start nail-biting over the "blue wall" outcomes.

19. I'm confident in Trump's unforced errors

All I read a few months ago was how Trump had hired "adults" this time to run his campaign and their organizaiton was professional. So far all I've seen is Trump quadruple down on being Trump. There is truth to the statement that a lot of people have short memories and have forgotten what a disaster he is but he seems intent on reminding everyone of those 4 years. We still have 6 months until the election, there is a 0% chance that Trump will suddenly reverse course and there is about 95% chance that what he is doing now will look tame when September and October roll around.

I confess I was worried a few months ago when Biden wasn't hitting him enough for my liking but there is truth to the statement that when your opponent is screwing up you should just sit back and let him. They seem to be pushing him when he needs to be pushed to make even worse statements and then sitting back and reaping the rewards. At some point they will hit him hard.

The biggest thing we have to fear is RFK Jr. he is a problem.
