House Oversight chairman invites Biden to testify as GOP impeachment inquiry stalls

Washington The Republican-led House Oversight Committee has invited President Biden to testify publicly as the panel's monthslong impeachment inquiry has stalled after testimony from the president's son failed to deliver a smoking gun.
In a seven-page letter to the president on Thursday, Rep. James Comer of Kentucky, the committee's chairman, asked Mr. Biden to appear on April 16, an invitation he is almost certain to decline.
"I invite you to participate in a public hearing at which you will be afforded the opportunity to explain, under oath, your involvement with your family's sources of income and the means it has used to generate it," Comer wrote, noting that it is not unprecedented for sitting presidents to testify to congressional committees.
They have done so just three times in American history, according to the Senate Historical Office. The most recent instance came in 1974, when President Gerald Ford testified about his decision to pardon former President Richard Nixon. Comer teased a formal request for Mr. Biden's testimony last week, which a White House spokesperson called a "sad stunt at the end of a dead impeachment."

(62,416 posts)Had Comer offered that to me I may have died laughing.
Really, Jimmy Comer, snark like that can be dangerous in the hands of an untrained professional.

(1,699 posts)I see this as a typical maga propaganda move. Invite him to testify in the middle of an election when they know they have nothing. When he declines you will hear them claim that he is afraid to testify because he knows he did 'something' wrong. Of course they will not say what that 'something' is because they have nothing but they will be able to run with the 'Biden is afraid' bs.

(7,850 posts)but no one is listening to their conspiracy blather...Comer and Jordan have zero credibility and their newest "GOTCHA" is never going to happen...Biden is under no obligation to honor their invitation ...but I would so enjoy watching our great House Dems shred the MAGA clowns with Joe, in his chair, laughing his ass off...

(895 posts)President Biden to Mr. Biden? It's not to distinguish between Hunter and the President, because of the way it's written.

(129,012 posts)I remember comments in a thread on DU that described how news outlets (in that thread's case, newspapers) will initially reference an official using their "official title" the first time the name appears in the article content, and then will change the handle to an "honorific" (Mr., Mrs., Ms., etc) in subsequent references.

It's not "stalled." The House GOPers have merely neglected to notice that the horse they've been beating was dead on arrival.
