Biden announces more than 500 sanctions on Russia after Navalny's death

Source: NBC

President Joe Biden on Friday announced more than 500 new sanctions on Russia over its war in Ukraine and the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny last week in prison.

Biden said the sanctions would target those connected to Navalny’s imprisonment as well as Russia’s financial sector, defense industrial base and procurement networks.

“They will ensure Putin pays an even steeper price for his aggression abroad and repression at home," Biden said in a statement of the sanctions. Biden noted the sanctions are timed with the two-year anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The U.S. is also imposing export restrictions on nearly 100 entities that support Russia’s military efforts and taking action to reduce Russia's energy revenues, Biden said.

3. Oh. That's nice. Now then, are we going to have a staff large enough to enforce the latest sanctions?

Apparently at the present time, many of the previous sanctions have gone unenforced - not by choice but by not having the staff or money to put teeth in the sanctions. I applaud Biden’s implementation of more sanctions, but this is all that we are privy to know. What goes on behind the scenes is a different story. God almighty, it seems that we are dwelling in a bad episode of the Twilight Zone.

It's my team's wheelhouse - I lead on (among other things) Global Trade Compliance.

Keep in mind - it's the businesses and individuals in the US who is responsible for complying with the law. You will be found out and punished - since Import/Export are pushed through the ACE and AES systems. As well - Financial transactions are heavily monitored.

Generally when these are implemented - they are razor sharp. The last thing I want to do is cut the point of contact at Customer in the US off - because of a Name Match address mismatch at a 92% match rate.
