Biden administration weighs action to make it harder for migrants to get asylum and easier to deport them faster

WASHINGTON The Biden administration is considering taking unilateral action without Congress to make it harder for migrants to pass the initial screening for asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border and quickly deport recently arrived migrants who dont meet the criteria, say three U.S. officials with knowledge of the deliberations.
The actions, which are still weeks away from finalization, are an effort to lower the number of migrants crossing the southern border illegally as immigration remains a top issue for voters heading into the 2024 presidential election.
Under the new policies, asylum officers would be instructed to raise the standards they use in their credible fear interviews, the first screening given to asylum-seekers who are trying to avoid deportation for crossing the border illegally. And Immigration and Customs Enforcement would be told to prioritize recently arrived migrants for deportation, in a last in, first out policy, the officials said.
A congressional aide with knowledge of the deliberations said the Biden administration has yet to make a decision, but raising the bar on asylum and deporting more newly arrived migrants are considered low hanging fruit and actions that can be taken quickly. The three U.S. officials said it is unclear whether the policies would be achieved through executive order or a new federal regulation, which could take months to implement.

(129,228 posts)The GOP really has nothing else. They have started to erase mention of -
1.) anti-abortion
2.) stealing the election
3.) the economy
and are divided within themselves on
1.) Ukraine
2.) Russia
3.) (new) Biden impeachment
The one other "ace" that they probably think they have other than "The Border" is "The Debt".

Refusing asylum hearings is bullshit. This whole plan is stupid.
If he does this, it also takes away his ability to say the GQP needs to pass something to fix it. They'll continue to say, "Gee, see, we told you Biden wasn't doing enough."

(5,845 posts)They refused to pass a border bill and demanded that Biden take executive action. So he's taking executive action?
They will sue him for exceeding his authority in 3...2...
Or maybe that's Biden's plan after all - illustrate their utter hypocrisy. The only thing is, you CAN'T shame them. And pissing off immigrant rights advocates (who vote Dem) is not a good idea.
He needs to leave it with the republicans and tell the public every chance he gets that they refuse to do their jobs. Or float the idea and then say he can't do it because it exceeds his authority, so Congress needs to do their job.
Honestly, I am so fucking sick of political gamesmanship.
