Rep. Dean Phillips, running for president, won't seek re-election to Congress

Source: Minneapolis Star Tribune

Democratic Rep. Dean Phillips will not run for re-election to the U.S. House as he goes all in on his insurgent primary campaign against President Joe Biden.

Phillips told the Star Tribune in an interview that he intends to "pass the torch" to another Democrat, just as he has asked Biden to do for him or another presidential candidate. Running for president does not prevent Phillips from seeking re-election to his House seat, since Minnesota's filing deadline for Congress isn't until early June.

"The fact is, I intend to be running for president well beyond that," Phillips said, adding that he thinks "it would be irresponsible to continue to string both my constituents along and the other candidates who both have entered the race and who might be interested in entering the race."

The third-term congressman's decision leaves Minnesota's Third Congressional District seat up for grabs. DFL state Sen. Kelly Morrison, who's also a practicing OB-GYN, and Democratic National Committee member Ron Harris have both announced campaigns for Phillips' congressional seat. And DFL Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon recently said he would consider a run if Phillips left his seat.

Too many Democrats in MN want him to go the fuck away; he has no chance to win a primary or be re-elected to the House and he sure as Hell won't be President.

Hell, how many IN his district know much/anything about him. He's either got an overly high opinion of himself and his impact in the scheme of things, or he knows he's out anyway. What a dip.

but I suppose for many business people and/or CEOs who are used to just issue directives, being one of 435 is hard.

Not only that - and I really only speculate - he came with the wave of 2018. Was part of the majority and climbed to a leadership position.

But as we have seen on other occasions - Rs leaving when they lost the majority - being in the minority is no fun.

He turned a long time Republican district into a Democratic one, won three times and I hope that Kelly Morrison will sail easily.

Am hoping he has not done damage seat wise.
He comes for a pretty savvy and smart family so for the life of me this whole thing with him is confusing.

Fox could use him as their pet liberal, except that he's not one. He reminds me of those politicians who speak of Democratic ideals without any real sense of what that means. Put him in a Democratic neighborhood in North Carolina, or California, or Texas, or Georgia, and he'd have nothing to say that anyone could vote for. Nothing at all.

His version of our party has no room for many who voted for Obama, or Biden, or Carter.

The White House on the retirement announcement of Dean Phillips, who's primarying President Biden:

"Congressman Phillips has voted for nearly 100% of President Biden's policies, and the President will miss his support for the Biden-Harris legislative agenda."
