'A rabbit hole of darkness and extremism' | Ex-Navy Reservist sentenced to 4 years in Capitol riot case

Updated: 11:39 AM EDT May 8, 2023

WASHINGTON — A federal judge sentenced a former Navy Reservist to four years in prison Monday for obstructing the joint session of Congress — adding to a three-year sentence he's already begun for illegally possessing unregistered silencers.

Hatchet Speed, a former Navy Reserves petty officer first class previously stationed at the National Reconnaissance Office in Chantilly, Virginia, was convicted in a March bench trial of one felony count of obstruction of an official proceeding and four misdemeanor charges. He was convicted separately in January in a Virginia case for possessing three unregistered silencers – which he told an undercover FBI employee he thought would be useful for holding “mock trials” for his enemies. Speed's term of service with the Navy Reserves expired in November.

A federal judge in Virginia sentenced Speed to three years in prison last month on the silencer charges. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden ordered Speed to spend another four years in prison on top of that for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, along with a $10,000 fine and $2,000 in restitution. McFadden, who served as a deputy assistant attorney general before being nominated to the federal bench in 2017 by former President Donald Trump, said Speed's anti-Semitic motivations for trying to stop the certification of the election were especially troubling to him.

"It seems to me you've gone down a rabbit hole of darkness and extremism over the past several years," McFadden said.

Why do people do things like that? Apparently, their brains perceive the experience as pleasurable. Perhaps every little interaction with the elements of their favorite conspiracy theories provides a spurt of dopamine (or dopeymine, as the case may be). They need a substitute, like methadone for recovering heroin addicts.

Of course though, if they feel the need to prove their smarts by "going up against the man" they're barking up the wrong tree.

"The man" - if anyone - are the CEOcracy and big banksters. And I bet they don't know where 90% of their money goes to:

Phil Ochs song from the 60s, first person viewpoint of a RWNJ thinking he's seen through the fog. From the
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rehearsals_for_Retirement album, 1969.

This is nothing new.

[Verse 4]
I can see them a-coming
They're a-training in the mountains
And they talk Chinese
And they spread disease
They want to get me
They want to hurt me
They want to bring me down
But sometime later
When I feel a little safer
We'll assassinate the President
And take over the government
And then we're gonna fry them
[Chorus]
Pretty smart on my part
Find my way in the dark

edit: now amplfied by major reich-wing media, which used to be only a sideshow until Reagan and Fox.

It isn't the government per se that we have to worry about, it is the Corporations.......

And worse is when the Government and Corporations join forces, which is the definition of Fascism.....

I left the Corporate world in 1980, when I saw, first hand, how the large corporations were conducting business.......and how the Federal Government was passing or ignoring laws and regulations to help them run wild.....

I have been yelling about it from the rooftops ever since........I just stood there shaking my head at the so called Reagan Democrats.
I was amazed at how many people just listened to a few TV ads the week before the election, believing everything that was said by a candidate. Despite the history of that candidate, they voted for them, then promptly retreated to their own little world, not to surface until four years later.

I have often said, the perfect title for a book about the last 40+ years would be:

While The Nation Slept.................

and here we are today, wondering WTF happened???????...................

I got into it a little bit on Facebook this weekend. I was very civil but some of them were not. I provided backup for my points and they just won’t accept it.

Damage on Jan. 6th? I show that an estimated $3M in damage was done. Nope. That’s fake.

Reagan’s history with mental health/homelessness? Here. Nope. Not true.

Etc. etc.

and stated that exclusively watching Fox News and listening to RW radio (Limbaugh) is the equivalent of quite literally Brain washing the listeners, not unlike what is done in countries like Russia, China, North Korea in their "re-indoctrination" camps for citizens that don't fall in line with the Leaders rhetoric...........

The Republican Party has developed, with the use of massive amounts of Psy-ops, a strategy to turn their party into a

Corporate Fascist Tyranny.........

I recall listening to a few of Rush Limbaugh's beginning statements at the start of every show.

He would state something happening in the news, and then say "okay, I am going to educate you, my listeners on just how to think about this"......

Anyways they came here to perfect right wing propaganda, to reduce the share of our economy labor enjoys, and to increase corporate bureaucracy and regulatory burden on small business. Operation paperclip where we grabbed a few thousand German Scientists in the immediate post war time gets the press. Unmentioned is that under Eisenhower we took in several hundred thousand Nazi leftovers. The goal was to rebuild the decimated Republican party. I'd bet many of them are not good, even if there are exceptions where people left that Nazism behind. I know one example personally, which is why I noticed the story when I read it one time. His dad was Admiral of the flagship of the German Navy during WW2 he was of the Lorenz family. He got to be a Senate Page for some GOP Senator at age of 16 around 1953. But his politics were far right, I think he worked with James Baker, his field was international relations.

In the mid-19th century, Karl Marx wrote that religion is “the opiate of the masses” – disconnecting disadvantaged people from the here and now, and dulling their engagement in progressive politics.

i've been following the Lori Vallow Daybel trial. those people were off their rockers with religion.

We do not need to know the details of minds, darkness, dopamine, experiential pleasure, but we can understand that the entire paranoid, conservative, conspiratorial, self-defeating behavior/ lifestyle is "Self" serving.

Fallacious subjective self-identities can experience the fullness of 'being in the know' when the objective reality is that what they know is bullshite.

But even then it's mostly cooperation within one's own clan/colony. Convince people that Black, Jews, immigrants from the South are not THEIR clan, that they're out for THEIR jobs, their women, their culture ... it undermines the spirit of cooperation that most people should logically have evolved with.

Committed a crime while in the reserves. Court martial and remove all eligibility for VA benefits.

Consequences for criminal actions go beyond prison time....loss of free health car efor life.

Also, everyone of these felony convictions should be prevented from owning guns forever....just imagine if they were persons of color.

It's been a long time coming for these domestic terrorists...Here we are years after and we are just getting some convictions..DOJ has moved too slow and Merrick Garland has sat on his hands far too long...Because of it, Garland could cause us the larger convictions because we are coming up to the 2024 presidential election...
