At least 9 killed, including gunman, after Texas mall shooting

Source: WaPo

A gunman opened fire on an outlet mall in a Dallas suburb on Saturday afternoon, killing at least eight people, including children, and injuring at least seven others, authorities said.

A police officer who was in the area on an unrelated call heard gunshots before he “engaged the suspect,” fatally shooting the gunman, the city of Allen, Tex., said in a statement.

Authorities believe the shooter acted alone and “don’t believe there is another threat at this time,” Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey said Saturday evening.

Children were among those killed at Allen Premium Outlets, said Rep. Keith Self (R), who represents the area and said local authorities briefed him by phone after the shooting. Self said unconfirmed reports of a second shooter were false.

The US averages about 90 gun deaths per day.

That sums it up!

This "mall" appears to be made up clusters of outlet stores, each having its own entrance from the parking area vs an "indoor" mall with courtyards and concourses, and store entrances only accessible from within. The shooter apparently drove through the parking lot, pulled up near one of the stores, jumped out, and started spraying bullets (at least according to witnesses).

And we have more than one DUer who's familiar with the place. One said she's never going back and the other, who could hear the sirens from his house, said a girlfriend intended to shop there yesterday, but changed plans. And one young guy in a video I posted was shaken after seeing the bodies, though they were covered by the time they let the shoppers come out - with their hands up. I agree with the DUer who said she's never going back if I'd had the same experience.

And we already know that not one damn thing will be done. When we hear over and over about these shootings, I can't help remember what happened when there was a shooting in New Zealand. *sigh*

was the day of week and time of day when there would be a large number of people there. And agree - we will continue to hear the pandering words and the "people control, not gun control" mantras.

I had MSNBC on briefly yesterday (I think it was Alicia Menendez's show) and they had a couple of (D) members of the TX state legislature as guests, who as time went on, became more and more agitated, upset, and then angry, as the coverage slowly revealed details. One of them said "we only need '5' to go along with us" (paraphrase) and I just looked it up and saw where the TX state Senate has 19 (R)s and 12 (D)s, so she was apparently talking about that chamber. This is a bit "closer" in terms of representation compared to the TX state House, despite the extreme gerrymandering in general.

But the most JAW-DROPPING thing that came out on that show that I had no idea about, and that I don't even think I have seen any TX DUer (explicitly) mention, was that the TX state legislature only comes into session every other year (biennial).

A state that size and with that population (2nd behind California), does not come into session except during "odd numbered years".

There are just a couple other very rural states like ND, MT, NV that do this type of schedule, and I know TX has a huge geographic area, but the bigger state of AK doesn't even do that -

How he was still reelected, not to mention the power failure during that storm when people froze and died! Talk about "voting against your best interests!" Yikes!

And that's where I first heard about the shooting, it broke during Alicia Menendez's show. I like her a lot, she's smart and well spoken, I often prefer her when she's a substitute host. This was when it happened:

And that makes no sense - though wasn't that the state where the Democratic representatives left the state awhile back to stop the vote? But with Abbott in charge and a Republican majority, no wonder that we keep hearing about these tragedies, over and over...

10. I remember that

and I also remember NY AG Tisha James chasing down the NRA to sue them and they declared bankruptcy, while attempting to relocate to TX (the org was originally incorporated in the state of NY).

The courts rejected that fake declare bankruptcy-and-move attempt.

And despite the courts also rejecting NY's "corporate death penalty" move against the NRA, they are allowing the rest of the AG's case to move forward to require a monitor to oversee the organization's finances.

And thanks for the link to the clip but there are other segments of that show with the elected officials that I am trying to see if MSNBC will ever upload.

And yup, the Democrats in TX left the state to try to block Abbott's voting suppression bill.

Now that you mention it, I do remember Letitia James going after the NRA, these days it's tough to keep track without a scorecard. She got my vote for her promise to go after TFG and she's made good on that as well. And I remember the days before the NRA was political, must have been before Wayne LaPierre, greedy monster.

As for American Voices, that was the only clip available from MSNBC - and you know that I post a lot from there and I'm often disappointed when there's a terrific guest on - particularly on with Lawrence O'Donnell - but that segment is never uploaded. That's how I discovered Senator Whitehouse's video clips, MSNBC may not upload his appearance, but he does.

And I definitely remember the Democrats leaving Texas - why the Republicans keep getting elected there is a mystery to me - but we have the same situation here Upstate, we still have Stefanik. The other day there was a phone message inviting constituents to one of her rare telephone Town Halls - in five minutes. But I remember hearing about the last one - anyone who asked questions she didn't like or disagreed with her was blocked. So what was the point??

and luckily I found that status update on her NRA effort.

That area around Allen, TX has been reliably Republican untill apparently the 2020 election when it broke for Biden. But there are stil far too many there who are probably completely ignoring "politics" and are just trying to go about their business, but as we see, that mentality ends up entrenching the GOP control.

And I found one of the TX legislators who was on yesterday (TX Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who was on Alicia Menendez's show and also appeared on Ayman Mohyeldin's show that came just after) -

and apparently she was on with Michael Steele today -

When I heard her last week, I missed the name so I started searching the TX state Rep. page and saw her for one of the districts, but then when I clicked on the link, there was a different person there for that seat, so wasn't sure I got the right person. So I looked up her name next to the pic on the state Rep. page, and it indicated that she is now in Congress (am guessing she just got elected in 2022)... But I still wasn't sure if that was the same person until I saw the clip today.

Report of about 30 shots fired, 5 bodies covered in blankets, only 9 victims transported by ambulance to hospital.

Very sad. USA has reached an impasse. We can't do anything about our problems because Republicans support the NRA and gun money owns the Republicans, and 2A has been twisted into a libertarian gun pretzel, and Republican gerrymandering. This is Republican jingoism, the purpose of life is to make money for Republicans, gun industry, grab more political power to feed thoughts-and-prayer Christianity and Republican politicians who offer thoughts, prayers, and praise the bravery of LE that respond to these incidents. Ginning up emotions to feed the Republican money funnel.

Republicans ever think about the COST of this system? Damage to lives of the survivors, families? Lifetimes of income lost of the deceased? Hospital costs? 10 victims hospital bills alone would surely approach $2 million.

Some reliable organization needs to fire up a cost-benefit analysis of shooting incidents and the money trail.

Just livid today. And profoundly sad and in fear, frankly. It could happen to any of us or our families, or any ordinary folk.

Terrorist kills 8 more people in a Texas mass murder & injures 7 more.

This is the 126th day and 199th mass shooting of 2023. That’s a mass shooting every 15 hours. In total, 14,600 gun violence deaths…so far in 2023.

We don’t have to live like this.💔

Mr. Bayard does all of our grocery shopping. He now will only go very early in the morning, and then races up and down the aisles to get back out. If he sees someone that looks suspicious, he turns around and heads the other direction.

As a country, this cannot possibly continue. Is this where the abortion bans come from? Have to replace the people killed by gun violence?
