Prop 37 Supporters Holding Out Hope

Source: Petaluma Patch

Voters have decided the fates of California’s 11 propositions, with many celebrating the reported passages of Props 30, 35, 36, 39 and 40.

However, some Prop 37 supporters are refuting the predicted defeat of the proposition, which would require labeling of genetically modified foods (GMOs).

Proposition 37 is trailing by 558,832 votes, 47 percent to 53 percent, with all precincts partially reporting as of Friday afternoon, according to California's Secretary of State Debra Bowen’s office.

But, the office has also reported that nearly 3.3 million votes have yet to be counted.

7. Hoping, hoping...

We really wanted this to pass. Our home is fully in favor of disclosure and labeling, to know what is in our food. I think a great example would be that in the DU Cooking & Baking group, there was a question about finding non-GMO Canola/cooking oils...last I looked, no one knew how to determine that. That says it all to me...Monsanto and the other corps. want to hide the use of these seeds.

And, oh my gosh, there is actually a link in the article, that shows the break down as of 11/6/12 of the ballots (type) in the counties and quantity to be counted.

In Los Angeles County alone, there were half a million!

I'm still crossing my fingers.

8. Hope those as of yet uncounted votes will pass it. So we can be on par with Europe, at least.

We must take back lawmaking from the corporations. It's done one vote at a time.

Way to go California! Just for putting this on the ballot.

But WHY would anyone NOT vote for more labeling information, EVEN IF THEY WERE NOT ADVERSE TO EATING GMO PRODUCTS?

This I don't understand. What was the argument put forth by the opponents?

11. Prop 37 is a good idea, but its unfair to the markets

Prop 37 requires the food markets to label the produce GMO.
That rang unfair to me.

Big supermarkets like Safeway & Target could handle the cost but what about all the small mom&pop shops, convenience stores and everywhere else that carries produce?
What about schools, food trucks, open markets, etc...

Why wasn't the proposition worded such that the farm that uses the GMO product be responsible?

Most, not all produce, have some sort of label now identifying what it is, such as different types of apples, or melons.
Whomever makes those labels should be required to include GMO if applicable.

Placing the responsibility solely on the market doesn't make sense.
Ultimately, a company like Safeway will just force the supplier to do it anyway.
Convenience stores don't generally have that kind of push over there suppliers.

We're supposed to be the solid blue state with clean elections. But right now we're making Florida look fast and efficient.

13. Mathematically it would need 67% of the uncounted remaining votes to win.

E.g., half of the remaining votes, plus an additional 558,833 votes to close the existing gap and push it over the top.

Considering that it only garnered 47% of the vote counted already, a 20% jump in its polling numbers, among only the remaining uncounted ballots, would be nothing short of a miracle. I understand that some don't want to give up, but there's a point at which you just have to admit that you've lost, figure out where it went wrong, and start planning for your next try.

But you're probably right, though there are several counties (SF for example) that are at 67% yes.
