U.S. regulators rejected Elon Musk's bid to test brain chips in humans, citing safety risks
Source: Reuters
On at least four occasions since 2019, Elon Musk has predicted that his medical device company, Neuralink, would soon start human trials of a revolutionary brain implant to treat intractable conditions such as paralysis and blindness.
Yet the company, founded in 2016, didnt seek permission from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) until early 2022 and the agency rejected the application, seven current and former employees told Reuters.
The rejection has not been previously reported. In explaining the decision to Neuralink, the agency outlined dozens of issues the company must address before human testing, a critical milestone on the path to final product approval, the staffers said. The agencys major safety concerns involved the devices lithium battery; the potential for the implants tiny wires to migrate to other areas of the brain; and questions over whether and how the device can be removed without damaging brain tissue, the employees said.
A year after the rejection, Neuralink is still working through the agencys concerns. Three staffers said they were skeptical the company could quickly resolve the issues despite Musks latest prediction at a Nov. 30 presentation that the company would secure FDA human-trial approval this spring.

(2,032 posts)Computers powered by human brain cells may sound like science fiction, but a team of researchers in the United States believes such machines, part of a new field called organoid intelligence, could shape the future and now they have a plan to get there.
Organoids are lab-grown tissues that resemble organs. These three-dimensional structures, usually derived from stem cells, have been used in labs for nearly two decades, where scientists have been able to avoid harmful human or animal testing by experimenting on the stand-ins for kidneys, lungs and other organs.
Brain organoids dont actually resemble tiny versions of the human brain, but the pen dot-size cell cultures contain neurons that are capable of brainlike functions, forming a multitude of connections.
Scientists call the phenomenon intelligence in a dish.

I however believe people can do both bad and good things and celebrate the good.

a future of a low-cost but thoroughly enjoyable slasher flick based on a true story.
Plot follows: irritating pot-smoking trillionaire funds the development of the Neurocon chip - a portmanteau of Neural and Silicon - which can cure diseases, allow you to learn things without going to school, and even enjoy music and movies without a viewing or listening device. Everyone gets one.
Within three weeks someone learns to hack the Neurocon chip. At first its used for relatively minor things like bullying. Then it gets into actual crimes, and finally murder.
