MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis police chief on Saturday disbanded the city’s so-called Scorpion unit, citing a “cloud of dishonor” from newly released video that showed some of its officers beating Tyre Nichols to death after stopping the Black motorist. Police Director Cerelyn “CJ” Davis acted a day after the harrowing video emerged, saying she listened to Nichols’ relatives, community leaders and uninvolved officers in making the decision. Her announcement came as the nation and the city struggled to come to grips with the violence of the officers, who are also Black. The video renewed doubts about why fatal encounters with law enforcement keep happening despite repeated calls for change. Protestors marching though downtown Memphis cheered when they heard the unit had been dissolved. One protestor said over a bullhorn that “the unit that killed Tyre has been permanently disbanded.” Referring to “the heinous actions of a few” that dishonored the unit, Davis reversed an earlier statement that she would keep the unit intact. She said it was imperative that the department “take proactive steps in the healing process.” Read more: https://apnews.com/article/politics-memphis-crime-law-enforcement-1b7e8fa4ed7120a897086250d5d6da35 Article updated. In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, Davis said she would not shut down a unit if a few officers commit "some egregious act" and because she needs that unit to continue to work. "The whole idea that the Scorpion unit is a bad unit, I just have a problem with that," Davis said. The disbanding was announced as the nation and the city struggled to come to grips with video showing police pummeling the Black motorist. The footage released Friday left many unanswered questions about the traffic stop involving Nichols and about other law enforcement officers who stood by as he lay motionless on the pavement. The footage released Friday left many unanswered questions about the traffic stop involving the Black motorist and about other law enforcement officers who stood by as he lay motionless on the pavement. The five disgraced former Memphis Police Department officers, who are also Black, have been fired and charged with murder and other crimes in Nichols' death three days after the arrest. The recording shows police savagely beating Nichols, a 29-year-old FedEx worker, for three minutes while screaming profanities at him in an assault that the Nichols family legal team has likened to the infamous 1991 police beating of Los Angeles motorist Rodney King. Nichols calls out for his mother before his limp body is propped against a squad car and the officers exchange fist-bumps. The five officers -- Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith -- face up to 60 years in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

2. That is a very good decision.
Police Director Davis seems to be trying to respond to the family and community. Firing the five officers was the first step and this is a good second step. I don't know enough about her to know if she ignored some problems in the past, but she seems to be honest and empathetic now.

15. Unfortunately, she did these steps only
because it was caught, and on video. There are probably 100s of these nazi squads across the nation.

16. I mean, that's probably always true
But at least the unit was suspended as of Jan 7th when this occured, so that wasn't public-outcry-driven.

3. Issues of discipline, procedure, duty of care, standards
They acted like a Goon Squad. It's not like they don't know about these issues since they're happening everywhere else in recent years. So who's in command? At HQ, and on the scene? We need phone pole video everywhere.

5. A former chief pointed out today on an interview that...
there was no sergeant/supervising officer in charge of those goons. Things accelerated fast instead of de-escalating.
De-escalation has to be the watch word drilled in the heads of cop recruits endlessly. And to veteran cops on the job. |

6. She was also in charge of REDDOG in ATL so I suspect
She’s very attached to these special teams as a primary street level resource- she clearly believes they are worth the risk and I think it’ll be back again with a new name in the future if she remains in charge. Maybe next time it’ll be JACKELS or FRENZIED SHARKS. Who knows.

7. "the heinous actions of a few"?
At least 10 people were involved in this case, which to my mind is more than "a few." And, as much as we can appreciate her swift actions in firing the cops and getting the footage out, if she has an attitude that just a few people are the problem, she'll never resolve this because it seems pretty clear that this is a departmental (or occupational) cultural issue. You'll never convince me that was the first time they gave a severe beating to a suspect who didn't deserve one--they relished it too much and were too good at it.

13. I was about to say...
She said the officers currently assigned to the unit "agree unreservedly" with the step. I bet they did. So that they cannot be connected with the unit as more and more information comes out about this police goon squad. |

WTF is this?

The article suggests that because the officers are Black, racism isn’t a part of policing. But c’mon. Police are only held accountable when they’re Black. |

14. "Police are only held accountable when they're Black."
and I would add "or Brown" because the same happens with Hispanic officers. The "law" is suddenly followed and "discipline" is immediately meted out. White cops? Often lots of delays and FOP intervention and purported "investigations". The case of the cops who killed George Floyd was an aberration only because of the witnesses and so much of it that was filmed, and spread over the internet.

We all know they are going to keep trying the same things again and again.

20. Tell me, what group dynamics should one expect from a group called "Scorpion"
That is an identifying expectation of their own-self-perceived group - Like those called "Hell's Angels" or "Death Mafia" - they join because of what they see the group doing. Maybe OK for the military, but not civilian groups.

Until police departments weed out the violent thugs and guns are off the streets.

27. "What is stopping you, America?"
For starters, the misreading of the 2nd Amendment.
And second, being probably the most heterogeneous country in the world, the concept of "E Pluribus Unum" is riddled with some of the "Pluribus" people wanting to be "at the top" of a privilege pyramid at the expense of others (and enforcing it - even with indoctrination). |
