Florida Supreme Court OKs DeSantis request for grand jury on COVID vaccine issues

Source: Tampa Bay Times

TALLAHASSEE — The Florida Supreme Court on Thursday approved a request by Gov. Ron DeSantis to impanel a statewide grand jury to investigate alleged wrongdoing related to COVID-19 vaccines.

The Supreme Court issued an order that impaneled a grand jury for a year and appointed Hillsborough County Circuit Judge Ronald Ficarrotta to preside over it. Grand jury members will be drawn from five judicial circuits.

The approval came after DeSantis on Dec. 13 submitted a request that alleged “there are good and sufficient reasons to deem it to be in the public interest to impanel a statewide grand jury to investigate criminal or wrongful activity in Florida relating to the development, promotion, and distribution of vaccines purported to prevent COVID-19 infection, symptoms, and transmission.”

Chief Justice Carlos Muniz and Justices Charles Canady, Ricky Polston, John Couriel and Jamie Grosshans supported DeSantis’ request, while Justice Jorge Labarga opposed it, according to the order. Justice Renatha Francis did not take part.

prevented COVID-19 infection, symptoms, and transmission?

I presume there were no actually fake vaccines involved - that we're just talking about the known, nationally available ones.

"...to impanel a statewide grand jury to investigate alleged wrongdoing related to COVID-19 vaccines."

Don't they have to justify this? Absolutely incredible that this person has the power to denigrate manufacturers who fell over themselves getting help out in the early days of the pandemic. No good deed goes unpunished. Sure, we know they made money, but that doesn't change the fact that those vaccines did a tremendous amount of good.

So, at the end of the "investigation," and they got nothing, did DeSantis get what he wanted? What's the point of this? What a waste of money.

Yeah, I hope they can sue for defamation. The defense alone will cost millions.

have this discussion of the merits of lockdown during a tremendously deadly worldwide pandemic. As far as long covid, the bug is responsible for that.

I will say that when I was in the Army, I had to take mandatory vaccines. Nothing bad happened to me. And when I hired into hospitals, I had to have mandatory vaccines, or not even get a job. So, I happily forked over my shot records.

When I was a kid, my mother carted me off to stand in long lines to receive vaccines against stuff like polio, rubella, etc. Others came down with polio, but I did not. TY, Mom.

I have no idea what other medicine you are talking about. Oh, do you mean the bleach Trump wanted us to drink? Can't think of the name of the other horse treatment they recommended...I do remember the light up the ass they thought would work...

Sorry, but you obviously are in favor of DeSantis trying to prove that vaccines don't work. This is going to do a lot of damage to public health. This anti-science stance doesn't help a bit. If you want to support a nutcake like DeSantis, just don't take a shot. Get sick, if you like. It's your choice. I suspect, however, that this grand jury investigation has a lot more to do with how it makes DeSantis look than any concern he has over your rights.

Ever ask yourself why Trump ran to the hospital for a first-rate medical covid treatment when he could have stayed home and drank bleach?

How about we look into how many of your crony friends got PPV money and under what criteria they received it, eh? What was that? You have no idea what I am talking about? How about we look into how much of their PPV money ended up with you? Again with the no? Why is that?

The best that can come of this is that such an investigation will find absolutely nothing relating to "criminal or wrongful activity in Florida relating to the development, promotion, and distribution of vaccines..." I'm hoping the court approved this because the governor is technically allowed to make such a request, despite the forgone conclusion that it will be a colossal waste of Floridian's taxpayer money. But if Floridian's continue to support governors like DeSantis, that's what they deserve. It's a shame that the the state has become a radically conservative hellhole, but their voters will just have to suffer the consequences.
