Putin says Russia wants end to war in Ukraine
Source: Reuters
Dec 22 (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Russia wants an end to the war in Ukraine and that this would inevitably involve a diplomatic solution.
Putin made the comments a day after U.S. President Joe Biden hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in the White House and promised him continued and unwavering U.S. support.
"Our goal is not to spin the flywheel of military conflict, but, on the contrary, to end this war," Putin said. "We will strive for an end to this, and the sooner the better, of course."
White House spokesman John Kirby said Putin has "shown absolutely zero indication that he's willing to negotiate" an end to the war, which began when Moscow sent troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Of course, the question is whether this is just a precursor to another Russian draft, since Putin is a peace through victory and violence kind of guy.

Call it a war while protesting against the war and you get arrested for calling it a war.

(48,087 posts)Ukraine may win in the end, but their country is destroyed, citizens murdered, raped, tortured.
The real winners will be the US, NATO and Europe.
For a small price, Ukraine has strengthened them and damaged Russia.
Ukraine has paid the highest price of all.

(4,603 posts)The country of Ukraine will not be destroyed.
The few cities Russia has seized were taken with brute force artillery devastation. Most of Ukraine remains unscathed.

(48,087 posts)Most reports emphasize the destruction.
But Ukraine has suffered a great deal of damage anyway you slice it.
They will have paid a big price.
The point I am making is that Ukraine is taking the hit to strengthen the US and NATO.
And weaken Russia.

(4,603 posts)Putin has made no secret of his desire to wipe out Ukraine and erase the memory of it.

(48,087 posts)Yes of course they are fighting to save their own country.
But NATO and the US are getting a very big benefit as well.

(7,772 posts)US policy should recognize that the Kremlins intent regarding Ukraine is maximalist, inflexible, and will not change in the foreseeable future. The West should stop expending resources trying to change a reality it does not control and focus on what it can shape plenty: denying Russias ability to wage a war against Ukraine.
Negotiations, ceasefires, and peace deals are not off-ramps but rather on-ramps for the Kremlin to renew its attack on Ukraine in the future under conditions that advantage Russia. They are means to the same endsfull control of Ukraine and eradication of Ukraines statehood and identity.
The vital US interest in preventing future Russian attacks on Ukraine can be best achieved by denying Russia the capability to carry out those attacks. The immediate requirement is preserving Ukraines momentum on the battlefieldaccounting for a possible renewed offensive from Russia this winterto ensure that Ukraine secures the most advantageous position possible. The West should also eliminate Russias ability to attack Ukraine in the future, including by denying Russia a military foothold in Ukraine from which to launch attacks, resisting "peace" deals that the Kremlin will use to buy time to reconstitute its forces, not empowering the Russian defense industrial complex with access to Western markets, and committing to building Ukraine's defensive capabilities over the long term.

Rather than a response to Biden's reassurance of continued support, Vlad is probably reacting to Belarus' refusal to fight for him. That guy in Belarus has his own problems with citizens. Surely he doesn't want to get involved with this chicken fight.
Putin's nuts if he thinks that the war has to end with his possession of the seaboard. Fact is, he's having trouble fielding a competent army, and he has already emptied his prisons (or, thereabouts.) His citizens have either fled or been killed; are they going to stand for a second draft of untrained, unwilling average Joes who just want to go about their business?
Putin made a big mistake. He misjudged both the Ukrainian people, and the wild support that they would receive from the rest of the world. WE made a mistake in 2014 in not stopping Russia's annexation of Crimea. If Putin is allowed to keep what he has stolen, he will be back for second helpings. Or, thirds.
But now, his own infrastructure (military) has taken hits, and now he is whining again. Poor Pooty. The only offramp he can visualize is his victorious annexation of all the ports, and keeping Crimea, thus becoming the Food King, controlling all the exports according to his wishes.
There are parts of the world dependent on the freedom to sail the Black sea without interference. So, I see the fight the Ukrainians are putting up as benefitting more than themselves, as we have countries food impoverished because of PUTIN. (And the Duma.)
Kick his ass, Ukraine, don't be shy.
I just want to see the bridge hit again. (You know, they have to retake Crimea in order to eliminate that seaport on the Odesa side. They have to eliminate that supply line, because that is where the sub missiles are loaded up.)
