Republican Joe Lombardo has won the race for governor in Nevada, defeating Democratic incumbent Steve Sisolak
Republican Joe Lombardo has won the race for governor in Nevada, NBC News projects, narrowly defeating Democratic incumbent Steve Sisolak.
The victory for Lombardo, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, puts a Republican back in the top job in the pivotal presidential battleground state and could have major implications on the future of education and criminal justice in the swing state.
His projected win comes after days of delays in the processing of ballots in Clark County, the largest county in the state and the one that includes Las Vegas.
Sisolak conceded the race on Friday night.

Also, Democrats made gains in the state senate and assembly.
So Nevada wants more Democrats in their state legislature and probably will keep their incumbent Democratic US senator, voted for Democrats in state cabinet positions, yet went Republican for governor? The oddest state election Ive seen this year.

(95,301 posts)His problem? One of the key candidates he endorsed in an important battleground state refused to call him a "great president" during a debate earlier that evening.
According to the Times' report, the former president called the GOP chair at midnight on a Sunday evening to complain about Joe Lombardo, the sheriff of Clark County, who was running for governor.
"Someone had sent the former president clips of that evenings debate in the Nevada governors race. The Trump-endorsed Republican nominee, Joe Lombardo, the sheriff of Clark County, had declined to call Mr. Trump a 'great' president and had backed off Mr. Trumps stolen-election lie," the report states. "Mr. Trump fumed about withdrawing his endorsement, threatening to throw into chaos one of the nations most consequential swing states, a place with three competitive House races and a tossup Senate seat. Ms. McDaniel, the chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, pleaded with the former president. She asked him for one hour to fix the situation."
