RT America ceases productions and lays off most of its staff
Source: CNN
New York (CNN Business)The production company behind the American version of the Russian state-funded network RT laid off most of its entire staff on Thursday, according to a memo obtained by CNN.
Misha Solodovnikov, the general manager of the production company, T&R Productions, told staff that it will be "ceasing production" at all of its locations "as a result of unforeseen business interruption events."
"Unfortunately, we anticipate this layoff will be permanent, meaning that this will result in the permanent separation from employment of most T&R employees at all locations," Solodovnikov wrote in his memo to employees.
The layoffs would mean an effective end to RT America. The network, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin's main mouthpieces in the US, was dropped earlier this week by DirecTV. The satellite carrier was one of the two major television providers in the US to carry the network.

At least two RT America hosts and several production staffers have bailed on the Moscow-backed network in the wake of Putins invasion of Ukraine.

In the wake of Russias invasion of Ukraine, comedian Dennis Miller and others will stop hosting shows on RT America, the Kremlin-funded cable network that the U.S. intelligence community has deemed a state-run propaganda machine. Millers program, titled Dennis Miller + One, had run on the network since March 2020. But a source close to the Saturday Night Live alum confirmed to The Daily Beast that he will stop making the twice-weekly half-hour program.
He has no plans on going back, a source told NBC News, which first reported the news of Millers show ending. The comedian and conservative pundits show, like many on RT America, is produced by Ora TV and is licensed to the Russia-controlled network, which registered as a foreign agent in the United States in 2017. The show was largely a one-on-one interview series focused on entertainment and pop culture.
(snip)
While Miller and Papantonio have cut ties with the Kremlins state-funded network, some of RT Americas other big namesnamely former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and conservative talk-radio host Steve Malzberghave thus far remained quiet. Pro-wrestling legend and political iconoclast Ventura has hosted a weekly talk show on the network since 2017. Representatives for Ventura did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Malzberg, a former Newsmax host who now fronts a media criticism show, titled Eat the Press, also did not respond to a request for comment. Interestingly, however, he has used his Twitter feed to boost content praising Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a hero. (At the same time, Malzbergs on-air mentions of the invasion have expressly focused on the pro-Trump, Putin-friendly narrative that President Joe Biden is to blame for the bloody conflict.)

Plus William Shatner apparently had some 1/2 hour series that was being aired on RT and produced/distributed through Ora TV (originally founded by the late Larry King and funded by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim).

(3,193 posts)Imagine going back in time 40 years to 1982, walking up to a random person on any street in America, and saying, "In 40 years, there will be a news organization in America called 'Russia Today America.'" They would look at you in stark horror and think, "Oh God... the Soviets are going to win."
I'm not arguing that it should have been banned, of course. The First Amendment is a thing. But the fact that RT American even had an audience in this country is beyond bizarre.
